It depends entirely on the region. New York is loveliest in autumn (September to November) and spring (April to June); Hawaii is a year-round destination, with whale season from December to March; the Rockies split between summer hiking (June to September) and winter skiing (December to March); and the Southwest deserts are best in spring and autumn, avoiding the summer heat. We time each leg to its own season.

Maui or the Big Island for a first trip to Hawaii?
The Big Island if you want variety and space — it is the largest of the islands by a distance, with black lava coastline, an active volcano, and the calm Kona side where Four Seasons Hualalai sits. Maui if you want the classic Hawaii holiday: better beaches, shorter drives, and the Kapalua coast in the north-west where the Ritz-Carlton sits above the water. As a rule we send first-timers to Maui and returners to the Big Island, and anyone with two weeks to both, since the inter-island hop is short.
Should you drive or fly between the western lodges?
Drive, mostly, because the driving is the point. The country between Amangiri in southern Utah and Amangani in Jackson Hole is some of the most spectacular in North America, and flying it means paying to miss it. Budget two days with a stop rather than one long haul. Lake Tahoe is the outlier — it pairs more naturally with San Francisco than with the desert lodges, so we usually fly that leg.
Do US hotels charge resort fees, and can you avoid them?
Many do, and it is the most common unpleasant surprise on an American bill. Resort or destination fees are charged per night on top of the room rate, often for things you would assume were included — wifi, the gym, a newspaper. They are rarely negotiable, but they are always disclosable, so we tell you the number before you book rather than at checkout. On several of the properties here the preferred-partner credit offsets a good part of it, which is the practical answer.
