The Privata Perspective

Cotton baron Sheppard King's house on Turtle Creek was completed in 1925, an Italian Renaissance manor with an ornamental ceiling by Giovanni Primo Casci and a stained-glass window inspired by the Magna Carta. Caroline Rose Hunt saved it from demolition in 1979; the restaurant opened in 1980 and the hotel in 1981, the first of what became Rosewood. Its 142 rooms and suites run across nine floors, from 450 to 2,650 square feet, and were redone in 2020 by a team that included Thomas Pheasant.

The room to ask for is the Premier Room. It and the Grand Deluxe Room are both listed at 450 square feet, but of the two only the Premier's page lists a soaking bathtub, a dual vanity and extra closet space. The Deluxe Patio Room, on the first floor, trades the petite balcony for a private patio with garden seating. For outdoor space up high, the Rosewood Suite, on the top floor, and the Penthouse open onto rooftop terraces of 1,175 and 1,300 square feet.

We book it for clients who want Dallas at the pace of a private house: tea in the 1925 library at weekends, live music in the Mansion Bar on Friday and Saturday nights, a 25-meter pool heated year-round. Budget for the $45 nightly destination fee before tax, which covers the heated pool, the fitness centre and the lobby's morning coffee and afternoon snack service.
