Capella was founded in 2002 by Horst Schulze, a founding member of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and the man who ran it as President and COO through both of its Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards. Since 2017 it has been owned by Singapore's Kwee family through Pontiac Land Group, and it has stayed deliberately small: ten open hotels, every one of them in Asia-Pacific. What separates it from Aman or Four Seasons is that there is no house style to inherit. Each building is a separate architectural commission — Foster + Partners on Sentosa, Kengo Kuma in Kyoto, Bill Bensley in Hanoi and Ubud, André Fu in Taipei, Jean-Michel Gathy in Hainan, Make Architects in Sydney, David Chipperfield in Nanjing to come. Key counts run from 23 at Ubud to 192 in Sydney, and most sit under 120. The service model runs through the Capella Culturist, a dedicated host for each guest whose remit is cultural as much as logistical, and Auriga is the group's own spa brand. The record is not in doubt: Capella Bangkok was named the world's number one hotel by the World's 50 Best in 2024 and placed third in 2025, and Capella Sydney debuted at No. 12 and took Best Hotel in Oceania in 2025.

Where are Capella hotels?
There are ten open Capella hotels and every one is in Asia-Pacific: Singapore, Bangkok, Hanoi, Ubud, Shanghai, Hainan, Sydney, Taipei, Macau and Kyoto. There is no Capella in Europe, the Americas, Africa or the Middle East today. Florence is the announced European debut, targeted for 2027, and Diriyah in Saudi Arabia is the announced Middle East debut.
What makes Capella different from Aman or Four Seasons?
Scale and commissioning. Capella runs ten hotels against Aman's and Four Seasons' much larger portfolios, most of them under 120 keys, and each building is a distinct architectural commission rather than a brand template — Kengo Kuma in Kyoto, Foster + Partners in Singapore, Bill Bensley in Hanoi and Ubud. The service signature is the Capella Culturist, a host assigned to you for the stay, and Auriga is the group's own spa brand.
Which Capella should I book first?
Bangkok if you want the most decorated one — all 101 keys are suites or villas and it was the World's 50 Best number one in 2024. Sydney for the best building, a heritage Edwardian Baroque restoration. Ubud or Hanoi for Bensley at full volume, in a tented camp and a 47-room opera house respectively. They are more different from each other than the shared name suggests, which is the conversation worth having before you book.

Which Capella suits a first visit to Asia?
Bangkok and Singapore are the easy answers — both are effortless to reach, both work as the anchor of a wider trip, and both are city hotels with resort behaviour. Ubud and Hanoi are more of a commitment to a specific idea, and better as the second stop than the first.
Is Capella good for families?
It varies more than at most brands, so ask. Hainan is the straightforward family resort with multi-bedroom pool villas. Ubud has exactly one two-bedroom unit across the whole camp, so a family of four is a specific conversation rather than an assumption. Sydney and Singapore both handle families comfortably.
Do you advise on suite categories?
Always, and at Capella it matters more than usual. Kyoto has six Onsen Suites with a private hot-spring bath and 83 keys without one; Taipei's Pool Terrace Rooms open onto the terrace while others do not; every suite at Macau has an indoor plunge pool. The premium is worth it at some of these and not at others.
