A collection of landmarks, not a chain
Belmond grew by buying places that were already famous — the Cipriani on Giudecca, a 1592 monastery in Cusco, the Art Deco palace facing Copacabana Beach, the sleeping cars of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. There are twenty-eight hotels today, and the shape of the collection is unusual: ten are in Italy and six in Peru, so a Belmond trip is more often several Belmonds strung together than a single stay. LVMH has owned the group since 2019.
The trains
Seven of them, and they behave nothing like the hotels — different seasons, different booking windows, different sell-out behaviour. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express crosses the Alps between Paris and Venice on restored 1920s and 1930s stock. The Royal Scotsman tours the Highlands and the Britannic Explorer, new in July 2025, runs into Cornwall, Wales and the Lake District. The Eastern & Oriental Express returned to the rails in 2024 on Singapore–Malaysia round trips. In Peru the Andean Explorer crosses the altiplano overnight and the Hiram Bingham runs up to Machu Picchu and back in a day. The grand suites go first, often a year out.

Les Bateaux Belmond is a fleet of seven small hotel barges working the waterways of Burgundy, Provence, Champagne and the Bordeaux vineyards, carrying four to twelve guests apiece. Six are sold on charter — the whole boat, its crew and its chef, for one party — while Napoléon can also be booked by the cabin. They move at walking pace, which is rather the point.

Two, both in Botswana, both twelve tented rooms. Eagle Island Lodge sits in the Okavango Delta and is a water camp — mokoro canoes, motorboats and helicopter flights over the floodplain. Savute Elephant Lodge is the opposite: dry-country Chobe, big elephant herds and the predators that follow them. They are usually taken together, and the light-aircraft hop between them is the part that needs planning.
