Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya's original beachfront hideaway, reopened in 2023 after a full redesign, on a white-sand bay in front of the world's second-largest coral reef
The Privata Perspective
Maroma was the hideaway on this coast before the coast had hotels — a small beachfront estate on Punta Maroma, built into jungle that was never cleared, facing a stretch of sand that regularly gets called the best in Mexico. It reopened on 3 August 2023 after a full redesign by Tara Bernerd, with materials and textiles sourced entirely in Mexico, and the result is warmer and more Mexican than the resort it could easily have become.
Belmond publishes 19 rooms, 50 suites and 3 villas, spread low through the trees rather than stacked. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world — sits offshore, which is what makes the snorkelling and diving here worth doing rather than merely available. Dining is unusually strong for a beach hotel: Woodend by Curtis Stone, Bambuco by the Handshake team, Casa Mayor, and Freddy's on the sand.
The honest planning notes: this is the Riviera Maya, so sargassum can affect the beach in some months and it is worth asking us about your dates rather than hoping; and Cancún airport is around forty minutes away, which makes it one of the easiest long-haul beach weeks from the US. We book the beachfront suites and the villas, and we ask about the reef trips before you arrive because the good slots go early.
