The Privata Perspective
Deià is the village on Mallorca's north-west coast that painters and writers never quite left — Robert Graves lived and is buried here — and La Residencia is the reason people can stay in it properly. Two 17th-century manor houses, once occupied by Cistercian monks, sit in terraced gardens of olive and citrus above the village, with the Tramuntana mountains behind and the sea a short drop below.
It opened as a hotel in 1984 and has stayed deliberately artistic rather than glossy: there is a working gallery, Sa Tafona, in the old olive press, and resident donkeys that give their name to the trails through the estate. Belmond publishes 67 rooms and suites, including three signature suites and one villa. Dining runs from El Olivo in the vaulted press house to the Tramuntana Grill by the pool, with Restaurante Miró for something lighter.
What we tell clients: the Tramuntana road to Deià is beautiful and slow, so do not plan a tight arrival, and the village itself is tiny — this is a hotel for walking, swimming at Cala Deià, and doing very little at speed. It also runs seasonally rather than year-round, so the shoulder months are worth checking early. We book the suites facing the village and the valley, which read very differently from the garden rooms.
