Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel, Taormina
Taormina's first hotel, built in 1850 beside the Greek Theatre, with Mount Etna filling the view and a Michelin star in the garden
The Privata Perspective
Some hotels have a view. Timeo has the view — it sits directly below Taormina's ancient Greek Theatre, on the terrace where Goethe, Wilde and half of literary Europe came to watch Etna smoke above the Ionian Sea. It was built in 1850 as the first hotel in Taormina, and it still behaves like the town's drawing room rather than a resort.
Belmond publishes 67 rooms and 2 signature suites, plus 21 more rooms in Villa Timeo, the residence next door that reopened in May 2026 with interiors by Laura Gonzalez and its own infinity pool and bar. The cooking is serious: Otto Geleng holds a Michelin star and takes its name from the painter who convinced northern Europe that Taormina was worth the journey. A Dior spa opened here in 2026, Dior's first permanent spa in Sicily.
The practical thing to understand is that Timeo is a hilltop hotel in a hilltop town — there is no beach at the door. That is what sister property Villa Sant'Andrea is for, down on the bay at Taormina Mare, and the shuttle between the two runs all day. We book the theatre-facing rooms, which are the whole point and the first to go, and pair the two houses when a trip wants both the town and the water.
