The Privata Perspective
Capella's first hotel in Japan, opened on 22 March 2026, and a serious piece of siting: Kengo Kuma built it in Miyagawa-chō on the grounds of the former Shinmichi Elementary School, next to the restored Kaburenjo theatre where the district's geiko still perform.
The six Onsen Suites are the reason to stretch — each has a private hot-spring bath fed from roughly three thousand feet below the site, with a courtyard garden off it. Auriga adds three further private onsen rooms for guests in the other categories. Kyoto has no shortage of new luxury hotels; what this one has that the others do not is the geothermal water, the address inside a working geisha district, and SoNoMa — the first overseas outpost of the three-Michelin-star SingleThread.
