Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort
A 96-room wellness retreat in Lanai's upland forest, where ten private spa hale and a Nobu kitchen run to one evidence-led programme
The Privata Perspective
Sensei Lanai is a Four Seasons that stopped selling nights. The Lodge at Koele opened in 1991, Four Seasons took over in 2005, but in November 2019 it reopened as a wellness retreat, interiors rebuilt by Todd-Avery Lenahan. It stands in Lanai's uplands, not on the coast, and the 25-minute flight from Honolulu comes with the programme.
Ninety-six keys over two storeys, and the ladder is short. Sixty of them are Koele Rooms at 450 square feet; the Deluxe adds fifty and little else; only the two Kaiholena Suites change the scale, at 1,200. Floor space is not what the premium buys — the ten private spa hale are, two with watsu pools.
We book it for clients who want a reset, not a holiday — solo travellers, and couples where both will do the programme, not one waiting by the pool. Koele is named for the clouds that come off the mountain gulches, so the drier late-spring-to-early-autumn stretch is the easier window. Spa hale get booked with the room.
