Four Seasons Resort Hualalai
A 1.8-million-gallon lava-rock aquarium called King's Pond, eight pools, and Jack Nicklaus's par-72 course on the Big Island's Kona Coast
The Privata Perspective
Hualalai is the Four Seasons on the Big Island: low buildings set along a black lava shoreline on the Kona Coast, open since September 1996 to a Hill Glazier design. The argument for it is what sits between the buildings — eight pools, among them King's Pond, a 1.8-million-gallon lava-rock aquarium, and an Ocean Pool held behind a lava-rock breakwater.
The room decides the rest. Every guest room is 635 sq.ft., so the price band buys the view, not the floor area — Oceanfront, Prime Ocean-View, Poolside, all the same size. The move that changes the stay is into a suite: the Superior Suites run 1,050 sq.ft., the Deluxe Suites 1,441, and the Kou and Kailani Suites at 2,600 sq.ft. are the largest keys that are not villas.
We book it for families, for golfers — Jack Nicklaus's par-72 course runs 7,117 yards on site — and for anyone who wants Hawaii without a resort strip. December to March for the whales; April to June for the quiet.
Accommodations
Ocean-View Room
635 sq.ft. 59 m²
One of ten guest-room categories that all measure the same — here the view is the variable, not the floor area
Superior Suite – Oceanfront
1,050 sq.ft. 98 m²
Five keys, and the only suite category the operator's table marks oceanfront
Deluxe Suite – Prime Ocean View
1,441 sq.ft. 134 m²
Six keys; all three Deluxe grades measure identically, so this one is bought for the aspect
Kou Suite
2,600 sq.ft. 242 m²
A single key and, with the Kailani Suite, the largest in the house — the villas above it are not counted as hotel rooms
Dining
‘ULU
Pan-Asian, Hawaiian-inspired
The signature dining room; the portal lists Sushi and Robata by ‘Ulu beside it as a separate counter
NOIO
Japanese sushi and omakase
Two listings on the portal — the restaurant, and the NOIO Omakase Counter as a venue of its own
Miller & Lux
American steakhouse
The steakhouse, and the only room the operator files under American cooking
Beach Tree
California Italian
The lighter of the big rooms; the portal carries a separate Poolside Dining listing alongside it
Hualalai Trading Company
Lounge
The only lounge the operator lists at the resort
Spa & Wellness
Hualalai Spa lists nineteen treatment rooms, plus eighteen private outdoor ones that include spa hales with soaking tubs and outdoor showers. At The Apothecary, black lava salt, hibiscus, crushed macadamia and your chosen oils are blended for a single treatment.
