The Privata Perspective

Four Seasons took a whole motu for this one. The resort stands on Motu Tehotu, one of the coral islets ringing Bora Bora's main island, looking back across the lagoon at Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia — the view that sells French Polynesia. It opened in September 2008, with architecture by Didier Lefort and Pierre-Jean Picart and interiors by BAMO, and holds 115 keys: 108 overwater bungalow suites and seven beachfront villas.

Aspect decides the stay. Most one-bedroom bungalow suites share a 100-square-metre footprint, so the choice is what you wake up to — beach, lagoon or mountain — and whether a plunge pool comes with it, which adds a little space. Twenty-seven bungalows carry one; only four of those are the Otemanu category, square on to the mountain.

We book it for honeymoons and anniversary trips where the photograph matters, and we book May to October for the clear skies. The mountain-facing plunge-pool bungalows are the request we make the day a booking is confirmed, not later.

One-Bedroom Otemanu Overwater Bungalow Suite With Plunge Pool

Four only, named for the mountain they face square on, with a plunge pool on the deck

Two-Bedroom Herenui Overwater Bungalow Suite With Plunge Pool

207 m² 2,228 sq.ft.

Two of them, the largest footprint out on the water, shared with the single Poerava suite

Five-Bedroom Beachfront Villa Estate

800 m² 8,611 sq.ft. plus 3,000 m² 32,292 sq. ft. of exterior living space

The largest key on the motu and the only five-bedroom one — on the sand rather than over the lagoon
