Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica
A plateau at the tip of Peninsula Papagayo, 97 metres above the Pacific, beaches on both sides and an Arnold Palmer course
The Privata Perspective
The operator now calls this Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica; it spent two decades as Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo. The site has not moved. It opened in January 2004 on a narrow plateau at the tip of the peninsula, 97 metres above the Pacific, flanked by beaches on both sides. Ronald Zürcher drew the buildings; the interiors are by Paul Duesing Partners.
The room decides the rest. Terraza, Brisa and Cielo are all the same 56 square metres, so the money there buys position rather than space. The step that changes the holiday is the Canopy Plunge Pool Suite: eleven of them, one bedroom, a private pool, double the footprint.
We book it for families, who have the three-bedroom suites and the residences to work with, and for golfers: the Ocean Course is Arnold Palmer's, par 72 over 6,788 yards. December to April is the dry window; May to November is green season and softer on rate.
Accommodations
Terraza Room
56 m² 603 sq.ft.
Thirty keys at the entry level; the Brisa and Cielo categories carry the same floor area, so what separates them is not size

Eleven of them — one bedroom, a private plunge pool and twice the floor area of a guest room
Canopy Premier Plunge Pool Suite (Three-Bedroom)
230 m² 2,480 sq.ft.
Three of them: three bedrooms and a plunge pool, the family option short of taking a residence
Miramar Suite (Three-Bedroom)
392 m² 4,219 sq.ft.
The largest suite in the resort and the only one of its kind; everything bigger on the peninsula is a private residence, not a hotel key
