Best Time to Visit
February to April is the sweet spot on the north coast, and the reason is a detail most guides miss: Playa Grande does not share Punta Cana's calendar. Here the wettest stretch is November to January, peaking in December at around 240mm, while the south and east coasts are markedly drier then. So a Caribbean Christmas is the damper option on this side of the island. February to April gives you drier days, sea temperatures around 26°C, and humpback whales — the Samaná season runs officially from 15 January to 25 March, with February the strongest month for numbers and calm water. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November; September and October carry the real risk and the deepest rate reductions. May and June are quietly excellent — warm and green, with the coast barely half full.

Fly into Puerto Plata (POP), not Santo Domingo — it is roughly 75 to 90 minutes by road to Amanera, against about three hours from the capital. El Catey (AZS) works too, about 80 minutes out, and is the better arrival if whales are the point, since it sits closer to Samaná. Build the trip around one long day on Samaná Bay in February or March and otherwise stay put; the north coast's appeal is that nothing here is programmed. Two things to understand before committing. This is the Atlantic side, so the sea carries swell and the beach is a proper beach, not a lagoon — poor swimming for small children on some days. And the golf is a real reason to come, or entirely beside the point, depending on the guest. Book festive weeks by the previous spring.
