Viking Ocean Cruises: Ships, staterooms and 2027 sailings

Calm, adults-only ships with a veranda in every room · 930- and 998-guest ships · more launching to 2029

Viking's ocean ships are built to one quiet pattern: 930 or 998 guests, every stateroom with a veranda, and no casino, no children and no formal nights.

Viking lists seventeen ocean ships. Nine carry 930 guests, from Viking Star in 2015 to Viking Saturn in 2023; the newer class carries 998, with Viking Vela (2024), Viking Vesta (2025) and Viking Mira (2026) sailing now, Viking Libra and Viking Astrea due for delivery in November 2026 and May 2027 as Viking's first hydrogen-powered ships, and three more dated 2028 and 2029. The ships are so alike that the itinerary, not the hull, is usually the choice.

The fare covers an excursion in every port, Wi-Fi, all meals including the alternative restaurants, beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, specialty coffee and tea around the clock, port taxes and fees, enrichment lectures, 24-hour room service and access to The Nordic Spa. Gratuities (Viking recommends USD 20 per person per night) and the Silver Spirits drinks package (USD 27 per night) are extra, except in the Owner's Suite.

Viking says plainly what it is not: no casinos, no children under 18, no inside staterooms, no formal nights, no butlers or white gloves. For a reader who likes a calm hotel and a good museum, that list is the appeal. For a reader used to a suite with a butler and an open bar, the all-inclusive lines higher up this page are the closer match.

Where we come in is everything around the ship: the flights, the hotel nights in Bergen, Athens or Vancouver, and the stateroom. Choose by deck and position as much as by category; on the newest ships even the standard veranda stateroom is 288 square feet.

Fares are Viking's own published fares, per person at double occupancy, cruise only, in US dollars: the lowest stateroom category still open on each departure when we read Viking's site on 9 October 2026, during Viking's Fall Sale. Viking lists port taxes and fees as included; flights are extra. We confirm availability for your dates before anything is booked.

Booking this line

Choose the ship class first: the 998-guest ships launched since 2024 have larger staterooms in every category. Then the departure: on several of the sailings below, the lowest open category showed only one or a few staterooms left when we read them. We plan the flights and the hotel nights at each end, which on a one-way voyage such as Seward to Vancouver is a large part of the trip.

Questions, answered

What do we get booking Viking through Via Privata?

On selected sailings, a Virtuoso shipboard credit: USD 200 per stateroom on 2026 sailings, confirmed in writing at booking. The fare is Viking's own, the same fare Viking publishes. Around the sailing we plan the flights and the hotel nights before and after, and we choose the stateroom by deck and position, not only by category.

Why is Viking in your premium tier?

Viking publishes what it leaves out: no casinos, no children under 18, no inside staterooms, no formal nights, no butlers. Viking calls its ships small; at 930 to 998 guests they are larger than most of the ships listed above them here. Gratuities and the full drinks package are paid on top of the fare. It is a calm, well-run way to see a region, and we book it gladly; it is not built to be a suite-and-butler experience.

What does a Viking ocean fare include?

An excursion in every port, Wi-Fi, all meals including the alternative restaurants, beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, specialty coffee and tea, port taxes and fees, lectures, room service and The Nordic Spa. Gratuities (USD 20 per person per night recommended) and the Silver Spirits package (USD 27 per night) are extra, and flights are sold separately.

Is Viking adults only?

Yes. Every guest must be 18 or over on the day of embarkation, and there are no facilities for younger guests.

Which stateroom should we book?

Every stateroom has a veranda, so the choice is space and timing. On the 998-guest ships a standard Veranda Stateroom is 288 square feet; the Penthouse Junior Suite, at 432, adds a sitting area and priority restaurant reservations. The Explorer Suites are two-room suites, and the Owner's Suite comes with the drinks package included.
