AmaWaterways: Ships, staterooms and 2026–2027 sailings

The twin-balcony river line · 31 ships in operation · AmaRudi from April 2027

AmaWaterways is the river line we put forward when the stateroom matters: most of its European rooms have two balconies, a French one and one you can step out on.

AmaWaterways said in April 2026 that it had 31 ships in operation and expects to pass 50 by 2032. Most of the European fleet carries 150 to 162 guests; AmaMagna, a double-width ship, carries 196, and her sister AmaRudi joins the Danube in April 2027. Away from Europe the line sails the Douro, the Nile, the Mekong, Colombia's Magdalena and, on the 28-guest Zambezi Queen, the Chobe in Africa.

The fare covers every meal with wine, beer and soft drinks at lunch and dinner, a Sip & Sail cocktail hour before dinner in Europe, shore excursions with local guides, Wi-Fi, bicycles on most European ships, and The Chef's Table, a tasting-menu restaurant with an open kitchen, on every ship except those in Portugal. US prices include port charges. Gratuities, premium drinks and some optional excursions are extra.

Uniworld sits above it on our list for three reasons: the drinks inclusion stops at mealtimes and the cocktail hour, gratuities are on top, and most of the European ships share one design rather than being built as one-offs. What you get in return is the room. On AmaLea the twin-balcony categories run to 235 sq ft, and on AmaMagna the Grand Suites reach 474 sq ft and the Owner's Suite 710 sq ft.

It suits couples and friends who want the river, the towns and the wine without a big ship. The minimum age is four, or twelve on Africa trips, and there are no children's programmes. There is no medical staff on board.

Fares are the lowest fare AmaWaterways' own price data showed for each departure on 9 October 2026: per person at double occupancy in an entry-level stateroom, cruise only, in US dollars, port charges included, as AmaWaterways states. Fares move with its offers; we confirm which categories are open on your dates.

Booking this line

Pick the ship and the stateroom before the river: on the standard European ships the twin-balcony AA and AB categories are the ones to hold, and on AmaMagna the suites are few. We add the hotel nights at each end, which on a one-way river cruise is half the trip.

Questions, answered

What is the best AmaWaterways booking offer?

Judge any offer on what reaches you per suite. Booking through Via Privata, sailings of USD 40,000 or more carry a USD 1,500 onboard credit from us, on top of whatever the line itself is running for your dates and the consortium amenities the sailing qualifies for — at the same fare you would pay booking direct. Selected dates also carry a Virtuoso onboard credit, AmaMax dates carry onboard credit, and some departures are Virtuoso hosted; below USD 40,000 those are what booking through us adds. We confirm in writing exactly which benefits your dates carry before you commit.

What does an AmaWaterways fare include?

Every meal, with wine, beer and soft drinks at lunch and dinner, a cocktail hour before dinner in Europe, coffee and water all day, shore excursions with local guides, Wi-Fi, bicycles on most European ships, The Chef's Table restaurant on most ships, and port charges in US prices. Gratuities, premium drinks, some optional excursions and air are extra.

What is a twin balcony?

A stateroom with two ways onto the river: a French balcony, floor-to-ceiling doors that open in the room, and a separate outside balcony you can sit on. On AmaLea these categories measure 235 sq ft. It is the layout that sets the line apart, and the one we would book.

Why is AmaWaterways in your premium tier?

Because of the inclusions rather than the ships. Drinks stop at mealtimes and the cocktail hour, gratuities are on top, and the European ships follow one design. For the most inclusive river fare, with a butler from Suite level, Uniworld is the line we list above it; for a balcony you can step out onto, AmaWaterways is the line we look at first.

Can we bring children?

From age four, or twelve on Africa trips. Guests under 18 share a stateroom with an adult, and there are no children's programmes or childcare on board.
