Uniworld
The one river line with hotel DNA · S.S.-class boutique ships
Uniworld has been on the rivers since 1976, and says it was the first American company to set sail in Europe. It sits inside The Travel Corporation, and Uniworld says many of its ships share a design team with the Red Carnation Hotel Collection. That is the whole point of the line: there is no Aman or Four Seasons river ship, and Uniworld is the closest thing to one. The fleet page lists twenty-four hulls across Europe, the Nile, the Mekong, the Ganges, the Banda Sea and the Peruvian Amazon.
The fare is the argument. Dining, unlimited fine wines and premium spirits, excursions, onboard entertainment, daily fitness classes, 24-hour room service, ship-wide Wi-Fi, gratuities for onboard staff, bicycles and Nordic walking sticks all sit inside the price. Book a Suite and a dedicated butler comes with it — Uniworld says its butlers do not double up in other jobs. Inclusions vary in Egypt, India, Southeast Asia and Peru, where butler service is different or absent.
Where it separates from the rest of the river field is the refusal to run a series. Uniworld's own copy says it does not believe in filling the rivers with a large fleet of identical ships, and the fleet bears that out: Klimt gold and Art Nouveau on the Danube's S.S. Emilie, Fortuny fabric and Murano glass on the Venice Lagoon's S.S. La Venezia, azulejos tilework on the Douro's S.S. São Gabriel. The cost is that two Uniworld cruises can feel like two different companies.
It suits travellers who want a hotel-grade room, a closed wallet and a fixed, well-run itinerary. It does not suit families with small children — the minimum age is five in Europe, Asia, India and Egypt, seven in Peru, and kids' programming exists only on the Generations departures. Nor is it a charter: the European ships in service carry 98 to 158 guests on a published schedule.

The top category, and it exists on only a handful of hulls. Uniworld calls the 506 sq ft pair on S.S. Victoria and S.S. Elisabeth the largest suites on the rivers of Europe; take the adjoining Suite and the two become 759 sq ft with two bedrooms and a separate living room. Elsewhere: 390 sq ft on S.S. Beatrice, 651 sq ft on River Tosca, 592 sq ft on S.S. Sphinx, 924 sq ft on Mekong Jewel.

Catherine and S.S. Maria Theresa, 286 sq ft on the newest Super Ships, 253 sq ft on S.S. Victoria and S.S. Elisabeth, 220 sq ft on S.S. São Gabriel, 210 sq ft on S.S. Bon Voyage.
Deluxe French Balcony
150 to 194 sq ft
The step below a Suite, without butler service. S.S. Victoria and S.S. Elisabeth publish theirs at 188 sq ft, the newest Super Ships at 194 sq ft and S.S. Beatrice at 150 sq ft. Those two Rhine ships also list a Signature French Balcony at 253 sq ft — the same size as their standard Suite, but without the butler; the plain French Balcony category runs 140 to 227 sq ft depending on the hull. On several ships the balcony is a floor-to-ceiling window that raises at the touch of a button to make an enclosed conservatory.
Classic
135 to 180 sq ft
The entry category, and worth being straight about: Uniworld's own note on these rooms says the windows are situated at the water line. Marble bathroom and Asprey bath and body products are still standard, but we would not put a first-time client here.

Uniworld's 2027 Splendors of Egypt & the Nile page publishes no June, July or August departures. River Tosca and S.S. Sphinx both work this itinerary, so the ship is worth naming at the point of enquiry.
Asia and South America — Mekong, Ganges, Banda Sea and the Peruvian Amazon
January to April and September to December on the Mekong
The 2027 Mekong itinerary skips May to August. India, Indonesia and Peru run as separate products on their own calendars, and Uniworld's inclusions and butler service are not the European standard in any of them.
Booking this line
Book a year out for the summer Danube and Douro, earlier still for the holiday-market sailings, which go before the shoulder dates do. Aim at Suite level or above: butler service, the stocked mini-bar and unlimited laundry begin there, and on the newest Super Ships a Grand Suite plus the adjoining Deluxe French Balcony becomes a two-bedroom. Tell us the ship, not just the river — these hulls are one-offs and they are not interchangeable. We hold space, place the suite and build the extensions and flights around it.

Emilie; the Rhine gives you S.S. Antoinette, S.S. Victoria or S.S. Elisabeth, the last two carrying the 506 sq ft Royal Suites Uniworld calls the largest on Europe's rivers; Bordeaux is S.S. When is the best time to sail?
On the Danube and the Douro, Uniworld publishes departures from March through November, so late spring and September give you the weather without the August heat. Christmas and holiday-market sailings are separate itineraries with November and December dates. Egypt is the mirror image: the 2027 Nile programme runs January to May and September to December, with nothing in high summer. The Mekong skips May to August. One current caveat — Uniworld is flagging low water on sections of the Rhine, Main and Danube, with operational adjustments on select sailings, so we check the position before confirming anything.
Why book Uniworld through Via Privata rather than direct?
Same ships, same published departures, and we do the part that decides how the week goes: which hull, which suite category, which side of the ship, and how the pre- and post-cruise nights hang together. We only quote what Uniworld publishes, we never invent a rate, and we hold space while you decide. There is no online booking on our side — every Uniworld enquiry comes back as a written proposal.
Can we bring children, or take a third person in the room?
Children are allowed but not really catered for. Uniworld's minimum age is five in Europe, Asia, India and Egypt and seven in Peru, and it says plainly that it makes no special arrangements for little ones outside its Generations departures, which do carry family programming. Third-guest occupancy is narrower still: in Europe, Uniworld publishes triple accommodation only in designated suites aboard S.S. Catherine, S.S. Joie de Vivre and S.S. Maria Theresa (and aboard Aqua Blu in Indonesia), so we confirm it per sailing.
