Viking River Cruises: Ships, staterooms and 2027 sailings
The largest river fleet, adults only · 69 Longships and purpose-built ships on six other rivers
Viking runs more river ships than anyone else we book: sixty-nine Longships of 190 guests in Europe, and ships built for the Seine, the Douro, the Nile, the Mekong and the Mississippi.
The Longship is the backbone: 443 feet long, 190 guests and a crew of 53 on every one of the 69 Viking lists, built from 2012 onwards with four more dated 2027. Where a river needs something else Viking builds for it: 168-guest ships for the Seine, 106 guests on the Douro, 98 on the Elbe, 82-guest ships on the Nile, 80 on the Mekong, and Viking Mississippi, 386 guests in 193 outside staterooms, on the Lower Mississippi.
The fare covers an excursion in every port, all meals, beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, specialty coffee and tea, Wi-Fi, port taxes and fees, and visits to UNESCO sites on the itinerary. Gratuities and the Silver Spirits package (USD 27 per guest per day, for drinks beyond mealtimes) are extra, and fares are cruise only, so flights are separate.
Compared with Uniworld, a Longship is a well-designed standard room on a standard ship, repeated across the fleet, rather than a one-off. The drinks stop at mealtimes unless you buy the package, and the top of the range, the Explorer Suite at 445 square feet, is a fine room, and there are no butlers. In return you get consistency, a guest list without children, and no casinos.
Choose by river and by stateroom. The Veranda Suite (275 square feet with a full veranda and a French balcony) is where the room starts to feel like a hotel suite; the Explorer Suite adds a wraparound balcony and the drinks package. On the Douro, Nile and Mekong itineraries the published day list starts on land, in Lisbon, Cairo or Hanoi, before the ship.

Fares are Viking's own published fares, per person at double occupancy, cruise only, in US dollars: the lowest stateroom category still open on each departure when we read Viking's site on 9 October 2026, during Viking's Fall Sale. Viking lists port taxes and fees as included; flights are extra. We confirm availability for your dates before anything is booked.
Booking this line
Pick the river first, then the stateroom: on a Longship the Veranda Suite is where the space changes, and there are few of them. Viking publishes one day list per itinerary and direction, so the ports below hold for the departure shown and others the same way round. We add the hotel nights at each end and the flights.
Questions, answered
What do we get booking Viking through Via Privata?
On selected sailings, a Virtuoso shipboard credit: USD 200 per stateroom on 2026 sailings, confirmed in writing at booking. The fare is Viking's own, the same fare Viking publishes. Around the cruise we plan the flights and the hotel nights before and after, and we choose the stateroom by deck and position, not only by category.
Why is Viking River in your premium tier?
Viking publishes what it leaves out: no casinos, no children under 18, no inside staterooms, no formal nights. The fare includes an excursion in every port and wine with meals, but not drinks beyond mealtimes or gratuities, and a Longship is a standard design repeated across the fleet. For one-off ships with a butler from suite level, Uniworld is the river line we list above it.
What does a Viking river fare include?
An excursion in every port, all meals, beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, specialty coffee and tea, Wi-Fi, port taxes and fees, and lectures and performances. Gratuities and the Silver Spirits package (USD 27 per guest per day) are extra, and fares are cruise only.
Is Viking River adults only?
Yes. Every guest must be 18 or over on embarkation day, and there are no facilities or services for younger guests.
Which river should we choose?
The Rhine and the Danube for castles and cities in a week; the Seine for Paris and Normandy on a roundtrip; the Douro for vineyards and a smaller ship; the Nile and the Mekong for a longer journey that combines hotel nights on land with the river. Viking Mississippi, at 386 guests, is the one American option.
