Best Time to Visit
October to April, with November, December, March and April the strongest of it: Red Sea days around 27–30°C, sea temperatures near 26°C, and AlUla in the low twenties by day. January nights in AlUla drop to 5–8°C and nobody packs for that. Hegra photographs best before ten in the morning, while the low sun still catches the tomb facades and before the light goes flat. Winter at Tantora runs mid-December to early January in AlUla — barely four weeks — and the good dates go early; the AlUla Arts Festival then picks up from mid-January into February. Ramadan falls roughly 8 February to 9 March in 2027 — restaurants outside hotels close during daylight and the country shifts to a night rhythm, which is either the wrong trip or the most interesting one. June to September averages above 40°C in AlUla and mid-forties further inland, and the coast turns humid: snorkelling still works, walking anywhere does not.
Insider Tips
Book the flights before the room. Red Sea International Airport takes only a handful of Saudia services a week from Riyadh and fewer still from Jeddah, so those departures decide your dates rather than the other way round; from the terminal it is roughly a 45-minute private drive to Six Senses Southern Dunes. Know what you are booking, too — the resort sits inland among the dunes, so the sea is an excursion rather than a step off your terrace. Pairing it with AlUla works neatly, since AlUla wants the same October-to-April window. Two things catch people out: there is no alcohol anywhere in the Kingdom, hotel bars included, and the distances are large — Jeddah to this stretch of coast is around five hours by road.

October to April is the season — warm days, crisp starry desert nights, and calm, clear seas for the reefs. Summer, from May to September, is ferociously hot inland, so desert life narrows to the early morning and the evening. The cooler months are also best for pairing the dunes with time on the coast.

Four or five nights lets the pace of the desert settle in — dune walks, the spa's longevity programming, and day trips to the reefs on the coast. It also combines beautifully with a few nights in Dubai or Doha at the start or end, which we sequence with the private transfers and flights.
