Jordan holds some of the ancient world's greatest sights within a few hours' drive of each other — the rose-red city of Petra emerging from its canyon, the desert valleys of Wadi Rum where Lawrence rode, and the mineral stillness of the Dead Sea at the lowest point on earth. Few countries deliver this much history per mile, in this much safety and comfort.

Best Time to Visit
March to May and September to November — and if you can only take one month, take April. Spring highs at Petra average about 20°C in March and 25°C in April, climbing towards 29°C by late May, the winter rain has finished, and Wadi Rum's valley floor can carry a brief flush of wildflowers for a fortnight in April. Autumn mirrors it, with October the pick. Avoid June to August outright: Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea average 33-35°C and regularly pass 40°C, and Petra gives you almost no shade between the Treasury and the Monastery. Winter is better than its reputation but properly cold — December to February brings rain and occasional snow to Amman and Petra, while Aqaba and the Dead Sea stay warm enough to swim. Ramadan runs roughly 8 February to 9 March in 2027; sites remain open, but hours shift.
Insider Tips
Give Petra two days rather than one. A single-day ticket walks people through the 1.2km Siq to the Treasury and straight back out, having seen a fraction of the site. Day one: in at opening, Siq and Treasury ahead of the coach groups, then the Street of Facades and the Royal Tombs. Day two: the 800-odd steps to the Monastery, better in afternoon light. Buy the Jordan Pass before you fly — it covers Petra entry and waives the visa fee, but only if you stay at least three nights in the country. Petra by Night runs Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and is ticketed separately from the day pass. Drive Amman to Petra on the King's Highway and give it the whole day — five to six hours at the wheel before you add Madaba, Mount Nebo and Kerak, against three flat hours on the Desert Highway.
