The Privata Perspective

Sayan is the Bali people picture when they picture Ubud, and it was purpose-built as a Four Seasons in 1998 rather than converted from something older. The arrival is the signature: a walkway crosses the valley to a rooftop lotus pond, and the building drops away beneath it toward the river.

Sixty keys, forty-two of them villas. Read the published sizes carefully — the operator quotes villa figures as indoor and outdoor space combined, so the 340-square-metre Riverfront Villa is not simply larger than the 216-square-metre suite. What the villas actually buy is position: a private pool, and the Ayung running below the terrace.

We book it for honeymoons and for anyone splitting a trip between Ubud and the coast. The Sacred River Spa is reason enough to give up a day to it. If stairs matter, ask for a suite in the main building near the restaurants rather than a villa down the valley.
