Amankila
Cascading three-tier infinity pools descending toward the Lombok Strait
The Privata Perspective
The original three-tier infinity pool that launched a thousand imitations worldwide. Ed Tuttle designed Amankila's cascading pools to mirror the rice-terrace paddies of the surrounding east Bali landscape, and the effect — three interconnected pools stepping down a verdant hillside toward the Lombok Strait — remains one of the most photographed hotel features on earth.
Amankila's east Bali setting, far from Seminyak's commercial noise and Ubud's tourist traffic, delivers a Bali that many visitors never discover. The Karangasem regency is the island's most traditional and least developed, home to the sacred water palace of Tirta Gangga, the ancient Aga village of Tenganan (where double-ikat textiles are still woven using methods unchanged for centuries), and the towering volcanic cone of Mount Agung — Bali's holiest peak.
The 34 suites are thatched-roof pavilions set into the steep hillside, each facing the Lombok Strait and the neighbouring islands of Nusa Penida and Lombok. The Beach Club, reached by a private path descending through coconut palms, offers a completely different experience — a secluded cove with black volcanic sand, sea kayaks, and a seafood-focused restaurant. The contrast between the breezy hilltop resort and the intimate beach below is one of Amankila's great pleasures.
