Peter Muller designed Amandari in 1989 as a village within a village — a walled compound of thatched pavilions laid out along paths that read like Kedewatan's own lanes, on the edge of the Ayung River gorge. It is the oldest Aman in Bali and, for a lot of people, still the best argument for what the brand does.
What separates it from newer Ubud resorts is that the village never left. Religious processions pass through the grounds, and local children come in for a Balinese dance class every afternoon. That is the reason to stay here, and it is also the honest caveat: this is not a sealed resort, the pavilions run along shared paths rather than sitting in private isolation, and Ubud town is a drive rather than a walk. If you want a hermetic hilltop retreat, Amankila on the east coast suits you better. If you want to be somewhere that was a place before it was a hotel, come here.

Spa & Wellness
Aman gives the spa no proprietary name — it is simply the Spa. Two open-air treatment balés surrounded by lotus ponds, a beauty room, sauna and steam, and a gym overlooking the lotus pond. Private yoga and meditation take place in a forest glade, and there is a tennis court. The signature treatment is the Village Spa Journey, drawn from the Balinese Melukat purification ritual, and the resort also arranges a Melukat water blessing.
