Best Time to Visit
May to September for safari, December to March for Cape Town: the two halves of South Africa peak at opposite ends of the year, and late September into October is the honest overlap. Through the dry winter the bush thins and animals concentrate on the last water; Kruger dawns drop below 10°C and afternoons reach the mid-20s, which catches people out. The Cape's winter, June to August, is wet and blustery — which is exactly when southern right whales fill Walker Bay, June to November, most of them inshore in September. Namaqualand's wildflowers run roughly mid-August to mid-September; jacarandas turn Pretoria purple through October. One caveat for a winter Cape trip: the Table Mountain cableway closes for about a fortnight of maintenance each year — 27 July to 9 August in 2026.
Insider Tips
Do the bush first and the Cape last; nobody wants a 5.30am game drive after a week of Constantia lunches. The routing most people miss is Airlink's direct Cape Town–Skukuza flight, about 2hr 25min, which saves doubling back through Johannesburg; from Johannesburg the Kruger airstrips are roughly 1hr 30min. Bush flights cap luggage at 15kg checked and 5kg hand, soft-sided only, so leave the hard case in a Cape Town hotel store. Choose the reserve on behaviour rather than brand: Singita Sabi Sand holds the most habituated leopards in Africa, generations of them raised alongside vehicles that follow them off-road, which is why they ignore you. Singita Kruger National Park drives off-road too, across a 33,000-acre private concession with no other operators in it, but trades leopard density for big-herd country and near-total solitude. Sabi Sand in June to September, and Cape Town over New Year, want booking nine to twelve months out and often carry minimum stays.

When is the best time to visit South Africa for safari?
May to September, the dry winter, is prime for Big Five game viewing: the bush thins out and animals gather at water. October to April brings lush green-season landscapes, newborn wildlife and superb birding, often at softer rates. The Cape and Winelands are loveliest in the southern summer, roughly November to March, so a combined bush-and-Cape trip is partly a question of balancing the two.
How many nights do you need in South Africa?
For a combined trip, allow three or four nights on safari in the Sabi Sand or Kruger and two or three in Cape Town and the Winelands — so seven to ten nights overall. Safari-only stays can be shorter; we build the internal flights so the join between bush and city is seamless.
Is the Sabi Sand a malaria area?
The Sabi Sand and Kruger lie in a low-risk malaria zone, and precautions are commonly recommended, especially in the wetter summer months. This is a medical question, so we always suggest confirming the current guidance with your doctor or a travel-health clinic. Malaria-free reserves elsewhere in the country are an alternative we can plan for families who prefer them.
