Singita means "the Place of Miracles" in the Shangaan language, and for more than thirty years the name has stood for a particular idea: that the greatest luxury in Africa is space — vast, protected, and shared with almost no one else. Founded in 1993 by Luke Bailes on his family's land in South Africa's Sabi Sand, Singita has grown into a collection of lodges and camps across four countries, yet it has never behaved like a hotel group.

What sets it apart is its purpose. Singita operates on a stated hundred-year commitment to preserve African wilderness, partnering with non-profit trusts — the Grumeti Fund in Tanzania, the Malilangwe Trust in Zimbabwe, and others — to protect well over a million acres. The luxury is real and considerable, but it exists in service of the conservation, not the other way around: fewer guests, more land, and revenue that funds anti-poaching, community, and rewilding work.

Below, a guide to the Singita lodges worth building a journey around — from the Serengeti's Great Migration to Rwanda's gorillas — and how to choose between them.

The Selection

Singita Sasakwa Lodge - Grumeti, Serengeti, Tanzania
01

Singita Sasakwa Lodge

$$$$$ · Grumeti, Serengeti, Tanzania

High on a hill above the Serengeti's endless plains, Sasakwa is Singita at its most grand — an Edwardian-style manor and a scattering of individual cottages, each with its own heated infinity pool and uninterrupted views across the Grumeti reserve to the horizon. Antique furnishings, a wine cellar, a tennis court, and a working stable lend the feel of a private estate rather than a safari camp.

The location is extraordinary: the Grumeti concession borders the western Serengeti, and the Great Migration crosses through, typically between May and July. Game drives, horseback safaris, and hot-air-balloon flights over the plains are all part of the experience.

The most opulent lodge in the Singita portfolio, and one of the great safari addresses on earth — a private estate on the edge of the Great Migration's path.

Singita Faru Faru Lodge - Grumeti, Serengeti, Tanzania
02

Singita Faru Faru Lodge

$$$$$ · Grumeti, Serengeti, Tanzania

Faru Faru is Sasakwa's contemporary sibling — a lower-slung, design-forward lodge set along the Grumeti River, its suites finished in a lighter, more modern palette of canvas, timber, and stone. A swimming pool overlooks a waterhole where elephant, buffalo, and big cats come to drink.

It is the choice for travellers who want the same peerless Grumeti wildlife and the migration on their doorstep, but in a more relaxed, barefoot register than Sasakwa's grandeur.

The same front-row Grumeti wilderness as Sasakwa, in a contemporary, understated key.

Singita Sabora Tented Camp - Grumeti, Serengeti, Tanzania
03

Singita Sabora Tented Camp

$$$$$ · Grumeti, Serengeti, Tanzania

Reimagined in recent years, Sabora is Singita's homage to the romance of the 1920s safari — a tented camp set out on the open Serengeti plains, where canvas suites open directly onto grassland grazed by wildebeest and zebra. The design is refined rather than rustic: chandeliers, layered rugs, and a pool, all beneath canvas.

Because it sits out on the plains rather than by the river, Sabora offers the most immersive sense of the migration when the herds are moving through — the sound of the plains at night is unforgettable.

Tented safari at its most romantic — Singita's plains camp, closest to the migration when the herds are in the Grumeti.

Singita Ebony Lodge - Sabi Sand, South Africa
04

Singita Ebony Lodge

$$$$$ · Sabi Sand, South Africa

The one that started it all. Ebony opened in 1993 as the first Singita lodge, on a private stretch of the Sand River in the Sabi Sand — the reserve synonymous with the world's finest leopard viewing. Recently reimagined, its suites blend colonial-safari romance with contemporary comfort, each with a private deck and plunge pool over the riverbed.

The Sabi Sand's open traversing rights and unrivalled predator density mean sightings here — leopard above all — are among the most reliable and intimate anywhere in Africa.

The original Singita, and arguably the best big-cat viewing on the continent — the Sabi Sand's leopards are legendary.

Singita Boulders Lodge - Sabi Sand, South Africa
05

Singita Boulders Lodge

$$$$$ · Sabi Sand, South Africa

A short distance from Ebony, Boulders takes its cue from the granite outcrops and the riverbed it overlooks — a more contemporary, architectural lodge of glass, stone, and timber, its suites reaching toward the water. The same superb Sabi Sand traversing and the same expert guiding team apply.

Boulders suits travellers who lean modern over classic, and families or groups who value its slightly larger, more open spaces.

Ebony's contemporary counterpart in the same peerless Sabi Sand reserve — modern design, identical wildlife.

Singita Lebombo Lodge - Kruger National Park, South Africa
06

Singita Lebombo Lodge

$$$$$ · Kruger National Park, South Africa

Within a private 15,000-hectare concession inside the Kruger National Park, Lebombo is Singita's most architecturally daring lodge — loft-style suites of glass and steel that seem to hang in the air above the N'wanetsi River gorge, all but dissolving the boundary between room and bush.

The concession's exclusivity means a vast wilderness shared with only a handful of guests, and the Lebombo hills give the landscape a drama distinct from the flatter Sabi Sand.

The most design-led safari lodge in the Kruger — glass suites floating over a river gorge in a private concession.

Singita Sweni Lodge - Kruger National Park, South Africa
07

Singita Sweni Lodge

$$$$$ · Kruger National Park, South Africa

Lebombo's intimate neighbour, Sweni hides among riverine forest on the banks of the Sweni River — just seven suites, making it one of Singita's smallest and most private lodges. Floor-to-ceiling glass and a muted, textural palette keep the focus entirely on the wilderness outside.

It is the choice for a couple or a single family seeking near-total seclusion within the same exclusive Kruger concession as Lebombo.

Six suites of near-total privacy in a private Kruger concession — Singita at its most intimate.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge - Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
08

Singita Kwitonda Lodge

$$$$$ · Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

At the foot of the Virunga volcanoes, on the edge of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, Kwitonda is Singita's gateway to mountain-gorilla trekking — one of the most moving wildlife experiences on earth. Its suites of volcanic stone and thatch look out toward the peaks, with private decks, fireplaces, and heated plunge pools against the highland chill.

True to Singita's ethos, the lodge sits on land being reforested with indigenous species through its own on-site nursery, helping expand the gorillas' protected habitat.

Singita's Rwanda lodge — a luxury base camp for mountain-gorilla trekking, wrapped in an active reforestation project.

Singita Pamushana Lodge - Malilangwe Reserve, Zimbabwe
09

Singita Pamushana Lodge

$$$$$ · Malilangwe Reserve, Zimbabwe

The least-known and, to many, the most special. Pamushana crowns a sandstone ridge in the private Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in south-eastern Zimbabwe — vast, dramatic, and almost entirely to yourself. Its suites, carved into and clad in local stone, look out over a lake and a wilderness of baobabs, granite kopjes, and ancient San rock art.

Malilangwe's low visitor density and its serious conservation work — including one of Africa's most important rhino populations — make Pamushana a safari for the connoisseur who has seen the rest.

Africa's insider secret — a private Zimbabwean reserve with rhinos, rock art, and almost no other guests. The Singita for those who have done the others.

Singita Milele - Grumeti, Serengeti, Tanzania
10

Singita Milele

$$$$$ · Grumeti, Serengeti, Tanzania

Singita's newest and most exclusive address, opened in May 2024 on the Grumeti reserve in the western Serengeti. Milele — 'forever' in Swahili — is a single exclusive-use villa of five expansive suites, taken as a whole for up to ten guests, with its own private chef, guides, safari vehicles and staff, an infinity pool and uninterrupted views over the plains.

It is the answer for a family or group who want a private wing of the Serengeti to themselves, on the same peerless Grumeti wilderness — with the Great Migration crossing through, typically between May and July — that makes Sasakwa and Faru Faru so sought-after.

Singita's most exclusive stay — a whole private villa on the Serengeti for one group of up to ten, with dedicated guides and staff.

Book it for: Multi-generational families and groups who want an entire staffed Serengeti villa to themselves.

Timing

When to Book

Singita's lodges are small and in constant demand, so lead times are long. In Tanzania's Grumeti reserve, the Great Migration typically passes through between May and July — the most sought-after window, best booked 9–12 months ahead. South Africa's Sabi Sand and Kruger lodges are excellent year-round, with the dry winter months (May–October) offering the easiest game viewing; 6–9 months is prudent. Rwanda's gorilla permits and Singita Kwitonda's few suites are the tightest bottleneck of all and should be secured as early as possible. For multi-country Singita journeys, we recommend beginning 9–12 months out.
