Best Time to Visit
May to October is the reliable window for Rio de Janeiro: winter highs around 24-26°C, sea temperatures near 22°C, and June averaging under 30mm of rain — the driest stretch of the year. December to March is Brazilian summer, hot, humid and prone to afternoon storms, and it carries the two events people build whole trips around: Réveillon on Copacabana beach on 31 December, and Carnival, which moves with Lent and falls in early February in 2027. Both fill Rio a year ahead and reprice it. Elsewhere the calendar inverts. Pantanal wildlife viewing peaks July to September, when the water recedes and jaguars work the riverbanks. The Amazon runs high from December to May, when you paddle through flooded forest; August to November drops the level, opens the trails and cuts the mosquitoes.

Book Rio a year out for Carnival or New Year — the Belmond Copacabana Palace faces the Réveillon fireworks directly and goes first, holding a five-night minimum over New Year with the gala itself ticketed separately, and minimum stays are the norm along the beachfront over both weeks. The mistake is treating Brazil as one trip. It is bigger than the continental United States: Rio to Manaus is about four hours in the air, Rio to Iguaçu roughly two. Choose two regions, not four. Our usual shape is four nights in Rio, then either the Pantanal or the Amazon, with Iguaçu as a one-night pivot rather than a destination. Go up Sugarloaf late afternoon and Corcovado at opening — cloud settles on Christ the Redeemer by mid-morning far more often than the photographs suggest. And book domestic flights alongside the hotels, not after.
