Best Time to Visit
For Sydney and Melbourne, aim at March to May or September to November — the shoulders beat the summer in both. October is the best single month: Sydney sits around 23°C, Melbourne near 20°C, and the jacarandas come out across Sydney's eastern suburbs from late October into mid-November. February and March are Sydney's wettest summer months, January is Melbourne's hottest, and both cities price hard over Christmas and New Year. Winter is underrated. June to August brings Melbourne highs near 15°C, but Sydney holds 18-19°C, humpbacks pass the headlands from May to November, and Vivid Sydney lights the harbour across late May and early June. If you are coming for the Australian Open in January, the Melbourne Cup in November or the AFL Grand Final in September, book hotels months ahead — event weeks, not weather, set the rates here.

Fly between the two — 1 hour 35 in the air against eleven on the train — but allow half a day door to door. Land in Sydney first. It is the easier city to be jet-lagged in, and Melbourne rewards you more once you are sharp enough to work the laneways. Four nights Sydney, three Melbourne, is the split that works. The Great Ocean Road is the standard error: attempted as a day trip from Melbourne it is nine hours in a car for two hours of coastline, so stay a night along the way or leave it out. Melbourne really does do four seasons in one day, so pack a layer even in January. And specify a harbour-facing room in Sydney at the time of booking; the inland ones cost nearly the same and look at nothing.
