Rosewood Cape Kidnappers is a working sheep-and-cattle farm on the Hawke's Bay ridgeline, home to Tom Doak's celebrated course and the world's largest mainland gannet colony. Rosewood Matakauri folds just thirteen suites and villas into the hillside above Lake Wakatipu, minutes from Queenstown, with the Remarkables filling every window.

Best Time to Visit
November to April is the window, and the three lodges pull in different directions inside it. December to February is peak: January and February are the warmest months, daylight stretches past 9pm, and Queenstown and the Bay of Islands sell out first. November brings the Mackenzie lupins and thinner crowds. March and April are the months we push hardest — settled weather, Central Otago vineyards turning gold, harvest in Hawke's Bay, and rates below January's. The gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers is active from roughly late September to early March, with the first chicks hatching in early November; the public walking track to it closes from July until the week before Labour Weekend in late October. Queenstown's ski season runs mid-June to early October, so a winter trip means Matakauri rather than a full circuit. Confirm winter operating dates for the Northland and Hawke's Bay lodges before committing.
Insider Tips
Run it north to south — Kauri Cliffs, then Cape Kidnappers, then Matakauri — and fly between them rather than driving. New Zealand's road distances lie: winding two-lane highways mean a 300km leg eats most of a day, and Auckland to Northland is slower than the map suggests. Two nights minimum at each lodge. Single nights waste the mornings, which are the best part of lodge life. Book December and January close to a year ahead, and expect minimum-stay requirements over Christmas and New Year, when the whole country is on holiday. The classic mistake is both islands in ten days; pick one and go deep. And see Milford by helicopter from Queenstown rather than the twelve-hour coach day — the flight over the Southern Alps is the experience, not the boat.

Ten to twelve nights covers the three-lodge circuit comfortably, roughly three nights at each with the scenic flights between.
