Seven Stars in Kyushu is the sleeper to book when Kyushu itself is the trip: journeys of one or three nights out of Hakata through Aso, Yufuin, Takachiho, Kirishima and Unzen, with shrine visits and craft workshops along the way and, on the longer routes, a night off the train. JR Kyushu launched it in October 2013 and calls it Japan's first luxury sleeper train. It is small — seven cars and ten suites 'for just 10 pairs of guests', so never more than 20 people — and in 2025 it received a COOL JAPAN AWARD in the Inbound division.

The train is royal wine-red with the prefecture names in gold, and its interiors carry Okawa kumiko latticework by Kinoshita Mokugei and work from the Kakiemon and Seiroku kilns. Car 1 is the lounge car, Blue Moon, with a bar and live piano; Car 2 is the salon car, Jupiter, a tea room and activity space with complimentary drinks; Car 3 holds the KAZ BAR, charged separately, and the Gallery shop. Eight Suites of about 10 m² run through Cars 3 to 6, and Car 7, at the end of the train, holds the two DX Suites, B at about 17 m² and A at about 21 m² behind a wall-to-wall panoramic window. Every room has its own shower and toilet; none has a bathtub or a television, and pocket Wi-Fi is provided.

The spring and summer 2027 programme has three journeys: the four-day Takachiho and Unzen Journeys, which spend the first and third nights on the train and the second at Takachiho Ryokan Shinsen or at Ryotei Hanzuiryo in Unzen Onsen, and the two-day Kuju Journey. The meals are by the Executive Chef of Seven Stars with named kitchens along the route — on the Takachiho Journey, Yamanaka, a Hakata sushi restaurant since 1972, KAI's wood-fired Italian cooking in Izumi, Restaurant Arena's French in Fukuoka and La Verveine in Yufu among them. JR Kyushu takes applications for its own dates only through its official website; the remaining dates go to travel companies in Japan and abroad as charters, and certain overseas travel companies are contracted to sell rooms on JR Kyushu's own dates.

On the dates JR Kyushu sells itself, places on Seven Stars in Kyushu are allocated by lottery, not first come, in an application window held twice a year — typically spring and autumn, for the following half-year's departures — and JR Kyushu also sells some dates through contracted overseas agencies. We track the application windows, prepare the application with you, and plan the rest of Japan around the dates you are offered.

Booking this train

Choose by season as much as by route. The four-day Takachiho Journey runs from March to June 2027 and the four-day Unzen Journey in July and August, each with two nights on the train and one off it; the two-day Kuju Journey, through Yufuin and Aso, runs from April to August and suits a shorter trip. The lottery decides the rest: JR Kyushu takes applications for its own dates only through its official website, in two windows a year and never by e-mail, one application covers up to four guests as two pairs, and results come by e-mail. So we plan in that order — the application first, then flights, the journey to and from Hakata, which the fare does not cover, and the rest of Japan around the date you are offered. Every guest must be 12 or older. JR Kyushu asks for a 20% deposit; cancelling costs nothing up to the 21st day before departure, then 20% from the 20th day, 30% from the 7th, 40% the day before, 50% on the day and the full fare after the start or for a no-show.

Questions, answered

How do you get a place on Seven Stars in Kyushu?

By lottery, not first come. JR Kyushu accepts applications for the dates it sells itself only through its official website, which has an English form, during application windows held twice a year — typically spring and autumn, for the following half-year's departures — and not by e-mail. One application can cover up to four guests, as two pairs, and results come by e-mail. JR Kyushu also contracts certain overseas travel companies to sell rooms. We track the windows, prepare the application with you, and plan the rest of Japan around the date you are offered.

Which journey should I take?

With four days, the Takachiho Journey (March to June 2027) takes in Kirishima-Jingu, Takachiho with the Amano-Iwato Shrine, and Aso's Tateno switchback, with the second night at Takachiho Ryokan Shinsen; the Unzen Journey (July and August) crosses by ferry to Shimabara for a night at Ryotei Hanzuiryo in Unzen Onsen. The two-day Kuju Journey covers Bungo-Mori, Yufuin and Aso with one night on the train, and is the one to choose when the rest of Japan needs the days.

Which suite should I book?

Eight of the ten rooms are Suites of about 10 m² in Cars 3 to 6; Car 7, the last car, holds the two DX Suites, B at about 17 m² and A at about 21 m² with a wall-to-wall panoramic window. Every room has a shower and toilet and none has a bathtub, so if a bath matters, the night off the train is where it comes: at Takachiho Ryokan Shinsen every room has a private indoor or open-air bath. Rooms take two at most; three to a room is not possible.

What does the fare include?

JR Kyushu includes rail fares and charges, private bus transport, meals, onboard entertainment, drinks including alcohol (selected premium items excepted), accommodation and entrance fees. Not included: the KAZ BAR, vintage alcohol, travel to and from Hakata, personal costs and insurance. Payment on board is by card only; cash is not accepted.

Can children travel on Seven Stars in Kyushu?

Not under 12: JR Kyushu requires every guest to be 12 or older. A departure runs with a minimum of 16 guests, and the train crew look after the journey; there is no separate tour escort.
