Belmond unveiled the Britannic Explorer in November 2024 and put it on the rails in 2025, billing it as the first luxury sleeper train in England and Wales. It is the most contemporary thing the company runs — no Art Deco pastiche, but a calm modern British interior — and its own strapline, the new British icon, is less of a stretch than it sounds given nothing else of the kind existed here before.
There are eighteen cabins in three published tiers: three Grand Suites, eleven Double Suites and four Twin Suites. The train carries two restaurant cars, a bar and observation car, and the Wellbeing Suite by Wildsmith, which Belmond bills as the first spa on the rails in England and Wales. Hendrik Huebner is General Manager and Sven-Hanson Britt was appointed Executive Head Chef in 2025; Simon Rogan hosts the train's named Taste of journeys.
Journeys are three nights out of London Victoria to Cornwall, Wales or the Lake District, with two six-night combinations for anyone who wants to link them. The Cornwall and Lake District runs leave on a Friday afternoon and finish Monday morning; the Wales run goes out on a Monday and returns Thursday. That weekend shape makes it the easiest Belmond sleeper to fit around a working week.

The weekend shape is the selling point: Cornwall and the Lake District run Friday to Monday, Wales runs Monday to Thursday, so a three-night journey costs one or two working days rather than a week. Because the train is new and small at eighteen cabins, 2027 dates are already selling. Belmond published a July 2025 debut in its 2024 announcement and an August maiden voyage in its July 2025 release, so we describe it simply as launched in 2025 rather than pinning a day. Grand Suites go first, and the Simon Rogan departures go faster still.

What makes the Britannic Explorer different from the Royal Scotsman?
Geography and age. The Britannic Explorer runs England and Wales from London Victoria and entered service in 2025 with a contemporary British interior; the Royal Scotsman has toured Scotland from Edinburgh since 1985 and is the more traditional of the two. Both carry eighteen cabins. If you want Cornwall, Wales or the Lakes, this is the only luxury sleeper that goes there.
How many cabins are there, and what are the categories?
Eighteen: three Grand Suites, eleven Double Suites and four Twin Suites. The Twin Suites are the ones to ask about when two friends are travelling together rather than a couple, and there are only four of them.
Is there a spa on board?
Yes — the Wellbeing Suite by Wildsmith, which Belmond describes as the first spa on the rails in England and Wales. With only eighteen cabins the treatment slots are limited, so we book them at the same time as the cabin rather than leaving it to the day.
