The Golden Eagle Danube Express is the sleeper to book for a long rail journey across Europe with the excursions, drinks and hotel nights already in the fare: up to 62 guests, on journeys of six to twelve days. The 2027 programme crosses the Alps by way of Lake Como and Lake Bled, runs through the Balkans, Transylvania, Poland and Sicily, goes Paris to Istanbul in both directions, and closes the year with the Christmas markets of Central Europe and New Year in Vienna. The train belongs to Golden Eagle Luxury Trains, which began as GW Travel in 1989 and in 2026 joined the Arsenale Group, the company behind La Dolce Vita Orient Express; Golden Eagle says its existing departures and itineraries are unchanged.

Every cabin has its own shower room, in two classes. Superior Deluxe Class is the larger, 8.6 m² including the bathroom: a 190 × 152 cm king-size bed, a sofa and two chairs, two picture windows, Wi-Fi and two USB points, and a 1.9 m² shower room. There are only 12 on each departure, four to a car. Deluxe Class cabins, five to a car, are 7.74 m² with two lower beds of 185 × 80 cm and a 1.5 m² shower room. Of the seven sleeping cars, four are Deluxe and three Superior Deluxe.

The social life of the train runs between the Bar Lounge Car and the Restaurant Cars. The Bar Lounge Car has a resident pianist and stays open until the last guest leaves; the Restaurant Cars serve each meal at a single sitting, with open seating and informal dress, and the wines were selected by Golden Eagle's founder, Tim Littler. The fare covers the cabin with an attendant and turndown, tour management, a UK-registered doctor, transfers, porterage, all gratuities on and off the train, meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, guided excursions and the hotel nights. Laundry is charged extra on this train, and there is Wi-Fi on board, though not in the Restaurant Cars.

Booking this train

Choose by the cities and the length. Paris to Istanbul is the long classic, five nights on board with a hotel night at each end; the Grand Alpine Express is the mountain-and-lakes route from Budapest to Venice; A Taste of Italy, six days from Taormina to Venice, is the shortest way to try the train, and December belongs to the Christmas markets and New Year in Vienna. With only 12 Superior Deluxe cabins on a departure, settle the cabin before anything else; Golden Eagle already publishes its 2028 timetable. Flights, visas and insurance are not in the fare, and Golden Eagle's booking conditions make travel insurance compulsory, so we book the flights and any nights before or after around the train. Golden Eagle allows a provisional reservation of up to seven days without payment, then asks for a 25% deposit and the balance 90 days before departure; under its booking conditions, cancelling 91 days or more ahead costs 10% of the booking, 61 to 90 days 50%, and 60 days or fewer the full amount.

Questions, answered

Which agency offers the most perks for booking the Golden Eagle Danube Express?

Via Privata books the Golden Eagle Danube Express at Golden Eagle's own fare, with the amenities confirmed in writing before you commit. Two layers stack: Golden Eagle's own inclusions and — on bookings of USD 40,000 or more — USD 1,000 in hotel credit that we fund ourselves, USD 500 at the hotel we book before the journey and USD 500 at the hotel after, for dining, the spa or anything else charged to the room. Compare agencies on that total rather than on any single headline perk.

Which cabin should I book?

Superior Deluxe Class if the bed matters: a 190 × 152 cm king-size bed in 8.6 m², with a sofa, two chairs and two picture windows, and only 12 on each departure. Deluxe Class is 7.74 m² with two lower beds of 185 × 80 cm, which suits two people who prefer separate beds. Both sizes include the private shower room.

What does the fare include?

Golden Eagle includes the cabin with an attendant and turndown, tour management, a UK-registered doctor, transfers, porterage, all gratuities on and off the train, meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, guided excursions and the hotel nights in the itinerary. Laundry is charged on this train. Flights, visas, excess baggage and insurance are not included, and Golden Eagle's booking conditions make travel insurance compulsory.

Which journey should I take?

Pick by the route and the length. Paris to Istanbul, or the reverse, is eight days with five nights on the train and a hotel night at each end. The Grand Alpine Express runs 11 days from Budapest to Venice through Innsbruck, Zurich, Lake Como and Lake Bled, and the Balkan Explorer runs 12 days from Venice to Istanbul. A Taste of Italy, six days from Taormina to Venice, is the shortest, and December has the Christmas markets and New Year in Vienna.

Who runs the Danube Express?

Golden Eagle Luxury Trains, which began as GW Travel in 1989. In 2026 it joined the Arsenale Group, the company behind La Dolce Vita Orient Express, and Golden Eagle says existing departures, itineraries and commitments are unchanged. The Danube Express is its European train; the Golden Eagle and the Golden Eagle Silk Road Express run its journeys in Central Asia and China.

What happens if a departure is not full?

Golden Eagle notes that many departures run with fewer guests than the maximum of 62. Minimum numbers apply, and if a departure falls short, Golden Eagle may run a modified service, offer an alternative tour or refund in full.
