Floating villas on Srinakarin Reservoir: shingle-clad barrel vaults on pontoons, each with a glass front and a deck with a ladder into the lake
The Privata Perspective
Z9 Resort floats on Srinakarin Reservoir at Tha Kradan in Si Sawat district, Kanchanaburi, about three and a half hours' drive from Bangkok and an hour and a half from Kanchanaburi town. Dersyn Studio designed it on a steel frame with reclaimed timber, OSB ceilings, bamboo, shingle roofs and glass, with natural ventilation and a closed-circuit system that treats the resort's wastewater before it returns to the lake; the project was completed in December 2017 and went on to win architecture awards. The main building, with reception and the restaurant Zmone, stands on the bank; the villas float, a row of arched pods along a timber walkway, reached from the car park by a long flight of steps rather than by boat. Kayaks and paddleboards are included, a jet ski, wake-surfing and a speedboat are hired by the hour, and Erawan Falls is forty minutes away.
Via Privata stayed three nights in June 2025 in an Escape North villa, paddleboarded and took the jet ski out from the pontoon, and visited Erawan National Park and Wat Tham Suea. It is a design-led lake resort rather than a luxury one: plain materials by intention, no communal pool and no spa, with the water, the architecture and the evenings as its reasons to come. Two or three nights is the right length.
