The Privata Perspective
InterContinental Khao Yai Resort opened in 2022 on the edge of Khao Yai National Park, two and a half to three hours' drive from Bangkok. Bill Bensley designed it around the early days of the Thai railways under King Rama V: reception is styled as a country station, rails run through gardens laid out around five lakes, and old railway carriages collected from around Thailand now hold 19 of the suites and villas, as well as Poirot, the Papillon bar, the spa and the kids' club. The other 45 rooms are in the main buildings. The resort has held One MICHELIN Key every year since 2024, including the guide's 2026 selection.
Via Privata stayed two nights in September 2023 in a Heritage Railcar Junior Suite and found the suite, breakfast, lunch at Somying's Kitchen, dinner at Poirot and the service all excellent. It is at its best as a two- or three-night escape from Bangkok, and a railcar is the category to book.

Spa and wellness at InterContinental Khao Yai Resort
Back on Track Spa occupies a restored railway carriage, recovered with a tree growing through one end, with four single treatment rooms, Thai and Western treatments and organic products from Siam Botanicals; a resident healer leads yoga and meditation. The fitness centre is near reception, the main pool sits beside a railway-style pavilion next to Somying's Kitchen, Planet Trekkers, the kids' club, has a carriage of its own, and the resort lends bicycles for the paths between its five lakes.
