The Privata Perspective
Sixteen keys is the entire property, in bamboo forest where Thailand, Burma and Laos meet at the confluence of the Ruak and the Mekong. Bill Bensley did the architecture and the interiors, and it opened in January 2006 — purpose-built as a camp, not a conversion. Fifteen tents, one two-bedroom lodge.
All three tent categories run to the same 54 square metres, five of each, so the choice between them is not a question of space. Above them sits one Explorer's Lodge at 232 square metres, the only key here with a second bedroom. We ask which tents face the rivers when we hold the booking, because the rate card does not say.
We book it for clients who want two or three remote nights between Chiang Mai and Luang Prabang, and for couples drawn to a camp with sixteen keys in it. November to February is the window — cool, dry, before the burning season turns the northern air. March and April we steer people elsewhere.
