The Privata Perspective

Four Seasons Chiang Mai stands on thirteen hectares of gardens and terraced rice fields in the Mae Rim Valley, under the Doi Suthep range, and the farm is a working one. The resort opened in 1995 and took the Four Seasons name in 2003, which is why it reads more local than most of the group.

Ninety-eight accommodations, but only sixty-four are pavilions: twelve are pool villas and twenty-two are private residence rentals. Every pavilion is the same seventy square metres, so the outlook is the whole decision. A Rice Terrace Pavilion looks over the paddies; a Garden Pavilion does not, and the difference in feel is wider than the difference in price.

We book it as the northern half of a Thailand itinerary, for people who want a resort with a landscape instead of a beach, and for families — the buffalo barn and the cooking school do more for children than any kids' club. November to February is the season. The twelve pool villas go first.

Accommodations

Garden Pavilion

70 m² 750 sq.ft.

Twenty-two of them, facing the gardens — the same footprint as every other pavilion on the property

Ten of them, and the reason to come: the terrace looks straight onto the working paddies

Pool Villa

403 m² 4,336 sq.ft.

Twelve of them, a private pool each, and the largest hotel accommodation the resort publishes — everything above this is a residence rental rather than a key
