The Privata Perspective
One&Only Le Saint Géran opened in 1975 on its own peninsula at the northern tip of Mauritius's Belle Mare coastline, with a calm lagoon on one side and the open Indian Ocean on the other. A multimillion-dollar investment in 2017 kept the much-loved colonial-style architecture and brought in a contemporary, beach-inspired redesign, relaunching the resort with rooms, suites and Villa One, a separate two-bedroom beachfront villa. The resort also lets private pool villas of two to six bedrooms.
The view decides the room. The Sunset Room looks over the lagoon, the Beachfront Room is a ground-floor room with direct access to the sand, and the Ocean Room and Ocean Suite face the open sea. Families have the Two-Bedroom Beachfront Suite (215 m², up to six) and the Three-Bedroom Beachfront Suite, the largest suite at 260 m² for up to ten. We send couples to TAPASAKE, an intimate overwater restaurant pairing Japanese cooking with Mediterranean influences, and everyone else to RIVA, the beach and pool club with an Italian Riviera mood. PRIME is the steakhouse, for Mauritian seafood and Australian beef, and Le Badamier serves lunch at the water's edge under its namesake tree, with DJs on the deck.
Mauritius' only Guerlain Spa pairs French beauty treatments with Bastien Gonzalez's Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio. Club One covers fitness and tennis, and KidsOnly takes the children — worth knowing, since the operator pitches the resort at families, romantics and adventurers alike rather than as a couples-only retreat. Go June to September for the cool, dry season; November to April is warmer and wetter, with most of the island's occasional cyclones falling between January and March.
