Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, Beijing
Forty-two courtyard houses spread through a hutong quarter on Beijing's Central Axis, within walking distance of Tiananmen Square, and No. 7 on The World's 50 Best Hotels 2026
The Privata Perspective
Mandarin Oriental opened here on 2 September 2024, and the group has nothing else like it: 42 courtyard houses spread through the Qianmen East Hutong Quarter on Beijing's Central Axis, alongside private homes, shops, restaurants and bars. The restoration reused the original brick-and-wood structure, and the operator puts the reuse rate of the original building at 83%. Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven are all within walking distance. It ranks No. 7 on The World's 50 Best Hotels 2026 and holds three MICHELIN Keys.
Every key is a house with its own courtyard, 110 to 491 sqm by the operator's count; the Three Bedroom Grand Courtyard, which combines three courtyard bedrooms, reaches 525 sqm. Ask for a Deluxe Courtyard (110 to 140 sqm) with a separate tearoom, or a Residential Courtyard for the persimmon tree in its courtyard. The Peking Mansion, once the home of a descendant of Tong Ren Tang, the traditional Chinese medicine brand, puts a single bedroom in 491 sqm and keeps a separate building for staff or security.
Two things to know before booking. There is no swimming pool. And Yan Garden, whose consultant Chef Fei the hotel bills as Michelin-starred, is MICHELIN Selected in the Beijing 2026 guide rather than starred. TIAO, the two-floor cocktail bar whose Chinese name, Shi Tiao ('Alley Ten'), comes from its original address on Caochang Alley Ten, made Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 at No. 50. We steer couples here for a Beijing stay built around walking the old city, and families to the multi-bedroom courtyards.
