Amanfayun
Restored village of ancient dwellings among tea plantations near the West Lake and Lingyin Temple
The Privata Perspective
An entire village restored and reimagined as one of China's most extraordinary hotel experiences. Kerry Hill converted dozens of centuries-old stone-and-timber dwellings in a forested hamlet nestled between the venerable Lingyin Temple — one of China's largest and most important Buddhist monasteries — and the celebrated West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has inspired Chinese poets and painters for over a thousand years.
Walking Amanfayun's stone paths through bamboo groves and tea gardens, past the sound of temple bells and the fragrance of osmanthus blossoms, feels like stepping into a Song Dynasty painting. The village character has been meticulously preserved: no two dwellings are alike, each retaining its original structure while Kerry Hill added the comforts Aman guests expect — underfloor heating, deep soaking tubs, and contemporary bathrooms invisible from the exterior.
The property's relationship with tea is central to the experience. Longjing (Dragon Well) tea — China's most prized green tea — is grown on the hillsides visible from the resort, and guests can participate in harvest during spring, attend formal tea ceremonies, and explore the tea-infused cuisine at the Steam House, where traditional steamer-basket cooking techniques produce dishes unlike anything served elsewhere in the Aman portfolio.
