Mandarin Oriental, Prague
Built on the site of a 14th-century Dominican monastery in Malá Strana, with the spa in a former Renaissance chapel and Gothic church walls preserved beneath its glass floors
The Privata Perspective
Mandarin Oriental, Prague stands on the site of a fourteenth-century Dominican monastery in Malá Strana, a five-minute walk from Charles Bridge, and the monastery is still legible inside. The Grand Ballroom was the monks' refectory. Restoration turned up more than 350,000 artefacts, among them a medieval well in the wine cellar. The spa fills a former Renaissance chapel, where the Gothic walls of the St Mary Magdalene church, dating from before 1329, are preserved beneath glass floors.
The hotel counts 99 rooms and suites across wings it names Baroque, Renaissance, Garden and Spa, and the wing decides the stay. For the Castle, ask for a Premier Castle View Room on the top floor of the Baroque wing. For quiet mornings, a Deluxe Terrace Room in the Garden wing has a private terrace over the Monastery Garden. The Monastery Suite is the only room at the top of the spa building.
We book it for couples and for second visits to Prague, when a quiet Malá Strana base close to the Castle suits better than the Old Town squares. Monastiq cooks contemporary Czech food drawn from Bohemia's culinary traditions, and its terrace opens from June to September. Plan wellness around treatments in the chapel spa, which has a vitality pool with hydrotherapy jets; the sauna is in the fitness centre.
