The Privata Perspective
Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti has carried the brand since December 2012, though the lodge itself opened in 2009. It stands on a kopje in the central Serengeti with a watering hole directly below the pool deck, and that is the whole design idea: between drives, the game comes to you.
Seventy-seven keys including five freestanding villas — large for a safari property, and that is the trade you are making. What it buys is infrastructure, which is why it works for families and for first-time safari travellers who do not want a tented camp. The Horizon Rooms face the watering hole.
June to October is the dry season and the river-crossing window; January to March is calving. We book the Terrace Suites for the private pool and the elevated deck, and we plan the internal flights carefully, because the Serengeti works flown rather than driven. Book the crossing weeks a year out if the migration is the reason you are going.

The Serengeti Kani Spa has six treatment rooms, all built for couples, each with uninterrupted bush views; its signature treatment is the 90-minute Kifa Massage. A separate 72-square-metre fitness centre runs 24 hours. The operator publishes no overall spa floor area.
