For a first Kenya safari, I book the three on this page in sequence: Giraffe Manor in Nairobi for the first night, Angama Mara on the escarpment above the Mara Triangle for the migration country, and Segera Retreat in Laikipia for species the Mara rarely shows, such as Grevy's zebra.
Kenya is where the safari was invented, and it still stages the greatest wildlife theatre on earth — the Great Migration pouring through the Maasai Mara, elephant herds under Kilimanjaro's shoulder, and the high, wild conservancies of Laikipia where rare species outnumber vehicles. I know no other country that packs this much of Africa into one light-aircraft circuit.
The properties match the drama. Angama Mara hangs thirty glass-fronted tented suites on the escarpment 300 metres above the Mara Triangle; Segera Retreat scatters stilted villas through a 50,000-acre Laikipia conservancy laced with contemporary African art; and Giraffe Manor in Nairobi — twelve rooms, where Nubian giraffes, once classed as Rothschild's, join breakfast through the windows — is, to my mind, the most charming single night in travel.
Kenya rewards early, precise planning: migration-season rooms and Giraffe Manor sell out the better part of a year ahead, and the country works best flown, not driven. That is where we earn our keep — sequencing Nairobi, the Mara and Laikipia by light aircraft, timing the river crossings, and securing the rooms everyone else discovers are gone.

January to March and June to October are the dry seasons; the Great Migration typically occupies the Maasai Mara from roughly July to October, with the dramatic river crossings inside that window. The November short rains bring green landscapes, softer rates and fine resident game. Nairobi is pleasant year-round at altitude.

Know which wing you are booking at Giraffe Manor. Its six Historic Manor rooms are set aside for guests also staying at one of The Safari Collection's sister properties; the six Garden Manor rooms, built in 2011, are open to everyone. On an Angama and Segera circuit, plan on the Garden Manor — Historic rooms open to all only within four weeks of travel, if any remain.

The herds are usually in the Mara from roughly July to October, having crossed from the Serengeti — exact timing shifts with the rains each year. Lodges overlooking the Mara Triangle, like Angama Mara on the escarpment, put you above the action with short drives to the crossing points. Book that window nine to twelve months ahead.
How many days do you need for a Kenya safari?
Seven to nine nights is the sweet spot: a Giraffe Manor night in Nairobi to land softly, three to four nights in the Maasai Mara, and two to three in a Laikipia conservancy such as Segera for a completely different landscape and rarer species. Light aircraft connect it all — no long road transfers.
Is Giraffe Manor worth it, and how far ahead should you book?
Yes — one night of giraffes leaning through the breakfast windows is the most joyful start a safari can have, and the fully-inclusive manor runs beautifully. It has only twelve rooms, and the six in the Historic Manor are held for guests of its sister properties, so tell us your dates early and we secure a Garden Manor room as the bookend to the main safari.
