Sra Pathum means lotus pond, and the palace of that name is still a royal residence in Pathumwan, next door to the busiest shopping district in Bangkok. Part of its old grounds now carries Siam Paragon and, behind the mall, Siam Kempinski, which opened in 2010 where the Siam Intercontinental once stood. The hotel is built in a ring around gardens and saltwater pools, and the mall is a covered walk from the lobby. That combination is the reason to stay. We spent two nights in a Deluxe Balcony Room, and Khun Meaw, who showed us round, took us through the rooms that open onto the pool, the family floor and the restaurants. The stay was comfortable rather than memorable, and the reasons to book Siam Kempinski lie less in the room than in what surrounds it: for a family, or for anyone whose Bangkok begins and ends at Siam Paragon, it is an excellent choice.

A Garden Behind the Mall

The location does most of the work. A covered walkway on the second floor leads straight into Siam Paragon, Siam Center and Siam Discovery are next door, CentralWorld is a short walk, and a complimentary golf cart takes guests to the Skytrain at Siam and to the malls. A day of shopping can start and end at the room without a taxi. Inside the ring, the hotel is a different place. The wings enclose landscaped tropical gardens with saltwater pools at their centre, one of them for children, and the rooms on the garden side look onto trees and water. Where Park Hyatt, two stops along the Skytrain, has its pool on a ninth-floor terrace, here the pools sit at ground level among lawns, and the hotel feels closer to a resort than to a city tower. We trained in the Health Club, which has Technogym equipment and runs Muay Thai classes. Kempinski The Spa offers Thai massage and couples' treatment rooms.

A Matter of Taste

Our own room was a Deluxe Balcony Room, 45 square metres with a balcony and a shower but no bath. It was ready as soon as we arrived and comfortable, yet not a room we felt at home in. The style is more classic hotel than private residence, and that is a question of personal taste rather than of standards: everything worked as it should, and many guests will ask nothing more of a city room. For ourselves, we lean towards Sindhorn Kempinski, its sister on Langsuan, which has a more residential feel and, to our minds, the stronger spa. If a bath matters, book a Premier Room instead. Khun Meaw showed us one in the low-rise Garden Wing, 45 square metres and recently renovated, with twin beds facing the garden trees and a tub and separate shower behind a glass wall with a blind, so the bathroom can be opened to the bedroom or closed off.

Steps Into the Pool

The rooms that make Siam Kempinski are on the ground floor. Twenty-two of them open directly onto the pools, and the Cabana Pool Access room Khun Meaw showed us is the simplest version: 40 square metres, a terrace whose steps lead straight into the water, space for up to four, and the Executive Lounge included. For a family that will spend most of the stay in the pool, it is the room to book. The Duplex Cabana is the loft-style version, 75 square metres with the bedroom upstairs and the pool off the living room. The Executive Lounge, on the 17th floor, serves breakfast, afternoon tea and evening drinks, with private check-in for its guests. It comes with the Executive and Cabana rooms and most suites, including the themed family suites, but not with the standard Family Suite or the Two Bedroom Family Suite, and we confirm access with the hotel for your booking.

The Family Floor

Families are where the hotel puts its effort. There are seven animal-themed family suites, each with a king bed for the parents and a bunk bed for the children, in one- and two-bedroom versions. The one we toured had a kitchen with a full-size fridge and a washer-dryer, a dining table for six and bath amenities for children. For a longer stay with small children, the kitchen and the washer-dryer matter more than the theme. Families who would rather skip the theme will find a kitchen in the standard Family Suite and the Two Bedroom Family Suite, and the Premier Family Room is simply two Premier Rooms joined. The Kempinski Kids Club, 275 square metres on the ground floor of the Royal Wing, takes children up to twelve every day, with a monthly programme of crafts and games.

Breakfast and Sra Bua

Breakfast at The Addition combines a buffet with an à la carte menu. We ordered avocado toast with poached eggs from the menu. On the buffet the simplest thing was the best: fresh young coconuts, though the buffet as a whole did not quite match the standard of the hotel. For dinner, the hotel's flagship is Sra Bua, its Thai fine-dining restaurant. It ran for years with Copenhagen's Kiin Kiin, and in 2026 it reopened as Sra Bua by Num Weerawat, under chef Weerawat Triyasenawat, whose Samuay & Sons in Udon Thani is recognised by the MICHELIN Guide. The cooking is built on Thai biodiversity and served as two tasting menus, one of them plant-led, and the MICHELIN Guide already lists the new restaurant. ALATi, across the lobby, is the hotel's grill, built around fire and smoke.

The Verdict

Siam Kempinski is a resort with a mall at the back door, and its strengths are specific: the walkway into Siam Paragon, gardens and saltwater pools at ground level, rooms that step straight into the water, and a family floor with themed suites, kitchens and a Kids Club. Our Deluxe Balcony Room was comfortable and well kept, and the breakfast buffet is the one area that falls a little short. For a family, or a trip built around shopping, it is the hotel we would recommend, in a Cabana room or a themed family suite; couples with little interest in the malls may find Sindhorn Kempinski more their kind of hotel.
