Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok, the first Kimpton in Southeast Asia, opened in October 2020 on Soi Tonson in Langsuan, inside Sindhorn Village and a few minutes' walk from Lumphini Park. It has the brand's habits: wine poured for every guest in the early evening, a yoga mat in every room, and pets welcome at no charge. It also has 360 keys, and at times the scale shows. We spent two nights in a Kimpton Suite, and it ranks among the best suites we have had in Bangkok. The pool, the gym, room service and CRAFT all lived up to it; our main reservation was Stock.Room, the all-day restaurant.

Relaxed, and Busy

The staff set the tone: friendly and relaxed without being slack. Our suite was ready when we arrived, with a welcome drink waiting, and the hotel's extras are practical ones: bikes for the park, and a Forgot It? We've Got It desk for whatever you left at home. Guests who like the ceremony of a grand hotel will find it casual. Its size is the one thing to be aware of. With 360 keys, 97 of them serviced residences, the lobby and the check-in desk can be busy at peak moments, and for all the warmth of the staff it is not an intimate hotel.

A Suite to Live In

The Kimpton Suite is 108 square metres, and what sets it apart is the plan. You come in through a hall with the wardrobes and a dressing area off it, so luggage and unpacking stay out of sight. Ahead is a separate living and dining room of a good size, with a comfortable seating area, a desk and a table for four by the glass onto the balcony. We ate room service at that table, and a suite with a real dining table gets used differently from one with a coffee table and two chairs. The bedroom is separate, and its curtains close fully, so it goes completely dark. The bathroom has daylight, which is not a given in a Bangkok tower, and the balcony looks towards Lumphini Park. Among the suite's standing amenities the hotel lists a fifteen-minute spa treatment per person. For a stay of more than a night or two, this is the category to book. The smaller suites start at 87 square metres, families have two-bedroom suites, and the 97 serviced residences, each with a kitchenette and a washer-dryer, suit long stays.

Half in Shade

The pool is on the third floor, in what the hotel calls its secret garden, half under the tower and half open to the sky. In Bangkok's heat that is the right way round: you can swim in shade at midday and lie in the sun at either end. We swam there and used the steam room. The gym is, with the Fairmont's, one of the two strongest hotel gyms we have used in Bangkok: Life Fitness and Hammer Strength equipment and a Peloton bike, open around the clock for hotel guests, with a HYROX Training Club and a Kimpton Run Club that leaves for Lumphini Park on the first and third Sunday of the month. We trained there, and it has what a full strength session needs. The spa, amaranth, is the hotel's own, with massages, facials and body treatments.

Eating In

Stock.Room was the least convincing part of the stay. The hotel's all-day restaurant, on the fifth floor, serves a buffet and an à la carte menu; the dinner buffet we tried was not to our taste, and its presentation lacked the polish of the rest of the hotel. Breakfast, in the same room, leans towards Asian tastes and was not our favourite either. Room service was the more successful way to eat in. We ordered a spread for the suite's table, hummus and dips with pitta, a chopped salad, chicken satay and a grill with fries, and it came laid as a restaurant would lay it. CRAFT, the café and craft-beer bar on the lobby floor, was a pleasure, serving coffee from Karo Coffee Roasters, including beans sourced from Nan province, with a planted terrace, and it is the one restaurant where dogs are welcome inside. The hotel's other tables are Ms.Jigger, the Italian restaurant; Ruby's, a small cocktail bar; Bar.Yard on the roof; and AVANT on the 30th floor, which holds a MICHELIN star under chef Haikal Johari and runs independently, with a tasting menu only.

Dogs Welcome

Kimpton's pet promise is applied in full. Pets stay free whatever their size, weight or breed, as long as they fit in the lift, in rooms on designated pet floors. The lobby, the guest lifts and CRAFT, inside and on its terrace, are open to them, the Ms.Jigger terrace admits them through the afternoon, and the bars do not. The hotel asks for a lead or a stroller in public areas and for pets to wear a diaper inside, sells both diapers and pee pads at the concierge, and offers beds, bowls and pet-sitting, some of it charged. The Fairmont, for comparison, takes dogs up to 30 kilograms and charges for them by the night.

The Verdict

Kimpton Maa-Lai is a luxury hotel that has dropped the formality and kept the standards where they matter most, in the suites. Ours was outstanding, and after it the pool and the gym are the best reasons to stay. Against that, it is a big hotel and can feel it in the lobby, and Stock.Room does not reach the level of the suites. For a stay built around a suite, a workout and Lumphini Park, with or without a dog, we would book it. Travellers who want an intimate hotel, or who plan to take most meals at Stock.Room, may be happier elsewhere.
Perfect for
Couples and families who want a suite with space to live in; travellers who train; long stays in the serviced residences; anyone travelling with a dog, which stays free whatever its size; and guests who want Lumphini Park and the Skytrain within a walk
Skip if
You want an intimate hotel, the ceremony of a grand one, the river, or plan to rely on the all-day restaurant for most meals
What to book
Kimpton Suite, as we did, for the living and dining room, the balcony and the park in view; an Essential Studio for its private balcony; and a two-bedroom residence for a family or a long stay. Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok is part of IHG Destined, IHG's programme for selected luxury travel advisors. Booked through our host agency, Fora Travel, on eligible IHG Destined rates, the stay includes breakfast for two each day, a US$100 hotel credit per stay, a welcome amenity, and an upgrade and early check-in or late check-out when available.
