The Privata Perspective
Six Senses Laamu, the only five-star resort on Laamu Atoll in the southern Maldives, sits on Olhuveli Island, a 65-minute seaplane flight from Velana International Airport. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so we plan flights to land in the Maldives by 3:00 pm local time, as the resort asks; otherwise a domestic flight and speedboat transfer is offered on request. The 94 villas stand on stilts over the water or on the beachfront.
Ask for the Sunset Laamu Water Villa, toward the middle of Jetty A and facing the sunset, or its pool version at the end of the jetty. On land, the Ocean Beach Villa with Pool sits on the beachfront; its family version has a children's bedroom and a dining deck at treetop level. For a full house, The Retreat comes with three or four bedrooms, direct lagoon access and a private 20-metre lap pool.
Underwater, the resort's marine biologists run the award-winning Maldives Underwater Initiative with the Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation and Olive Ridley Project. SHELL, its Sea Hub of Environmental Learning, can grow 10,000 baby corals, and 1,048,318 coral larvae were released onto the resort's reefs in 2025. Surfers get Yin Yang, a right-hander a short boat ride across the channel, plus Jetty C off the island's southern tip and Petrols, a peaky left; Tropicsurf runs the surf base, and June to September is the swell window. Leaf serves an adults-only Mediterranean menu from the resort's organic gardens, Zen contemporary Japanese, and Altitude a five-course dinner in a wine cellar of more than 300 labels.

High season; the reef life, from hawksbill and green turtles to manta rays, is there all year round

Surf season, with lessons and surf trips from the resort's surf shop; June to September, the South-West swell season, is the prime window

Turtles nest from May to September, and from July to October guests are invited to watch hatchings when the resort's marine biologist announces them
