Mandarin Oriental, Singapore
John Portman's 1987 Marina Bay hotel, redesigned by DesignWilkes in 2023 with its signature suites moved bay-side, home to one-Michelin-star Cherry Garden by Chef Fei
The Privata Perspective
Mandarin Oriental, Singapore opened in 1987 as The Oriental Singapore, one of the first hotels in the Marina Bay precinct, in a building by the American architect John Portman. It took its current name in 2005 after a refurbishment, then closed for a six-month transformation and reopened on 8 September 2023 with interiors by Jeffrey Wilkes of DesignWilkes. Gardens by the Bay and The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands are within walking distance; Changi Airport is a 20-minute drive.
The view decides the stay, and the redesign says so in colour: cool blues on the Marina Bay side, warm sunrise tones facing the sea, botanical prints facing the city. It also moved the signature suites to the bay side. Read the labels, though. The Marina Bay View Room's own spec line says 'Partial Marina Bay View'; the Club Marina Bay Room is the same 34 square metres with the full label and access to the HAUS 65 lounge on the 21st floor. For the bay without compromise, ask for that room or the Marina Bay Suite with Balcony.
We steer families here as readily as couples: the family-themed suites come with bunk beds and embu keeps a children's buffet corner. Cherry Garden by Chef Fei won its first MICHELIN star in the 2026 guide, and the hotel holds One MICHELIN Key in the guide's 2026 Singapore selection. February is Singapore's driest month. Book the Formula 1 weekend early, because the hotel faces the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
