Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern
Franz Josef Bucher's 1906 Palace Hotel on the shore of Lake Lucerne, reopened by Mandarin Oriental in 2022, with two-MICHELIN-Star Colonnade and the eight-seat, one-star Minamo
The Privata Perspective
Franz Josef Bucher built the Palace Hotel on the shore of Lake Lucerne, and it opened on 7 May 1906. Mandarin Oriental reopened it in September 2022 after a renovation by Iwan Bühler Architekten, with interiors by Jestico + Whiles, and it turns 120 this year. There are 136 keys, 45 of them suites, and most have a balcony or terrace. The old town and Schwanenplatz are ten minutes away on foot, and KKL Luzern fifteen.
The view decides the stay. The Superior Room (25 sqm) and the Mandarin Room (50 sqm) are both sold as city view, so more space does not buy the lake. Pay for the view instead: our first ask is a Deluxe Lake View Room with Balcony. For an occasion, the Panoramic Junior Suite is a one-off with a lake balcony, and the two duplex Panoramic Rooftop Terrace Suites on the sixth floor look 360 degrees over the lake and the Alps.
Dining is the other reason to come. Colonnade holds two MICHELIN Stars and Minamo, an eight-seat omakase counter, holds one. Colonnade's seasonal closure runs from 5 January to 31 March and Minamo's from 5 to 26 November, so food-led trips need dating. We book it for couples, for Lucerne Festival weeks, and for clients who want Lucerne on foot with the lake outside the window.
