The Privata Perspective

The house on the Quai des Bergues opened on May Day 1834, but Four Seasons has run it only since November 2005 — historic bones, a Pierre-Yves Rochon interior laid over them, and Bénédict Estier on the architecture. It sits on the right bank a few minutes from the Old Town and the banking quarter, looking across the water at the Jet d'Eau.

Category decides the stay, and the house is small in every one of them. There are 115 keys, seventy-two rooms and forty-three suites, but only seven Standard Rooms, and the twenty-four Deluxe Rooms are the largest single block in the hotel. Above those the ladder runs through the sixth-floor suites, done as Swiss chalet with fireplaces, to a single 170-square-metre Royal Suite. Small categories mean the request goes in early.

We book it for clients doing Geneva for business or as the front end of an Alpine ski week, and for Il Lago. Summer and early autumn read best on the quay.

Accommodations

Standard Room

24.4–33.5 m² 263–361 sq. ft.

Seven only, the entry category and the smallest keys in the house — classic Louis-Philippe furnishings and a marble ensuite bathroom

Deluxe Room

25.5–37.5 m² 274–403 sq. ft.

Twenty-four of them, the largest single block of keys in a 115-key hotel

Suite Mont Blanc

77 m² 829 sq. ft.

Four of them, sitting between the Executive and Presidential tiers at a flat 77 square metres rather than a range

Royal Suite

170 m² 1,830 sq. ft.

One only, and the largest key in the hotel — bigger than any of the Presidential Suites below it

Dining

Il Lago

Italian

The principal dining room — the portal files it simply as Italian, the operator's own press sheet as Northern Italian

Izumi

Japanese-Fusion/Nikkei

The second of the two restaurants, carrying the operator's own Japanese-Fusion and Nikkei label

Le Bar des Bergues

Bar

The hotel bar, which the operator files under lounges rather than restaurants

Salon Dufour

Lounge

The second lounge room; the operator lists afternoon tea under the same heading

Spa & Wellness

Spa Mont Blanc is a rooftop retreat looking over Lake Geneva to the Alps: five oversized treatment rooms, a double suite, a Moroccan hammam and a marble steam room, plus an indoor infinity-edge pool and a 24-hour fitness suite. The operator publishes 2,800 square metres.

When to Go

Jun–Sep

Lake season — long evenings on the quay and terrace dining

Dec–Mar

Ski season — the city as the gateway leg before the Alps
