Amanwella
Crescent-shaped coconut grove beach property on Sri Lanka's undeveloped southern coast
The Privata Perspective
The south coast of Sri Lanka at its most pristine, and Kerry Hill at his most assured. Amanwella's 30 suites step down a coconut-palm hillside toward a crescent of golden sand that remains one of the Indian Ocean's most unspoiled beaches. The architecture — clean concrete lines, infinity pool merging with ocean, frameless glass — is unapologetically modernist, creating a striking contrast with Sri Lanka's lush tropical landscape.
The Tangalle coast is far less developed than the island's western shores, and the surrounding area offers exceptional experiences. Blue whale watching from Mirissa — Sri Lanka sits on the planet's richest cetacean migration route — provides some of the most reliable large-whale encounters in the world. Yala National Park, home to one of the densest leopard populations anywhere, is within a two-hour drive for morning or afternoon safaris.
Amanwella also serves as a base for exploring Sri Lanka's cultural heritage: the rock fortress of Sigiriya, the cave temples of Dambulla, and the sacred city of Kandy are all accessible as day trips. The resort's position on the island's south coast means it enjoys both of Sri Lanka's dry seasons, making it one of the few properties in the country suitable for year-round visits.
