Amangalla
Within Galle Fort's UNESCO-protected 17th-century Dutch ramparts
The Privata Perspective
Heritage preservation at Aman's most refined. Amangalla occupies the former New Oriental Hotel within Galle Fort's 17th-century Dutch ramparts — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that remains a living, breathing community of shops, temples, and homes rather than a museum. Kerry Hill's restoration preserved the building's colonial bones — soaring ceilings, original timber fans, teak floors worn smooth by centuries of footfall — while introducing Aman's signature spatial generosity.
The 30 rooms are divided between the original colonial building and a newer garden wing, each offering a different character. The heritage chambers retain four-poster beds, original verandahs, and plantation shutters that open to views of the fort's cobblestone streets. The garden suites offer more contemporary layouts with direct pool access.
The Baths hydrotherapy centre, housed in a restored building with its own garden, is among the finest spa experiences on the subcontinent — a series of water-based treatments inspired by Dutch bathing traditions combined with Ayurvedic bodywork. Walking the fort's ramparts at sunset, watching cricket matches on the green, and dining in the atmospheric colonial hall beneath slowly turning fans are experiences that connect guests to Galle's layered history.
