May, June and September are the best weeks — warm days, long light on the river, and terrace weather without the August heat that empties the city of its own residents. Late September into October brings the harvest in Tokaj and the reopening of the concert season. December is Advent, when the markets on Vörösmarty tér and around St Stephen's Basilica take over and the thermal baths are at their most inviting. January and February are cold, quiet and cheap.
Insider Tips
Ask for a Danube River-View Room and mean it: the Gresham Rooms are the larger category in the house, but they look onto the courtyard, Zrinyi Street or Mérleg Street, and the whole point of this address is the water. Go to the Széchenyi baths at opening rather than at noon, and take Gellért Hill on foot at dusk for the view back over the bridges. We book the river-facing floors and the restaurant tables at the same time as the room.
