WhatsApp

Renaissance is a hotel barge for up to eight guests in four suites, run by European Waterways, which rates her Ultra Deluxe. She is 127 feet long and carries a crew of five. The saloon has wooden beams, classic dining furniture and artwork, and the operator compares the mood to a French manor house, with leather sofas and a hand-built bar for the aperitif. Forward, a large deck has a covered roof extension with a circular table for eating outside, hardwood sun loungers and a heated spa pool.

She works the Canal de Briare, which the operator calls France's oldest canal, completed in 1612, through the Upper Loire and Western Burgundy. The route runs from Montargis, known as the Venice of Gâtinais, towards the wine country of Sancerre, and crosses the River Loire on Gustave Eiffel's Briare aqueduct, a 662-metre canal bridge finished in 1896. At Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses the canal passes a flight of seven locks, now disused and a national monument.

The days are built around art, gardens and wine. Guests lunch in Rosa Bonheur's private salon at her château and tour it with one of its present owners, walk the gardens of the privately owned Château de La Bussière, visit the Mazet praline makers in Montargis, and taste at the Sancerre winery of Hubert Brochard. The 13th-century Château de Ratilly and its pottery workshop come late in the week, with walking and cycling along the towpath between stops.

Questions, answered

Which agency offers the most perks for booking Renaissance?

Compare totals, not headline perks: the barge's own inclusions and any agency credit on top. Via Privata books Renaissance at European Waterways' own fare and adds a USD 1,500 charter credit of its own on bookings of USD 40,000 or more. Every benefit is confirmed in writing before you commit.

How many guests does Renaissance take?

Up to eight guests, in four suites that can each be fitted as a twin or a double, looked after by a crew of five. European Waterways rates her Ultra Deluxe and gives her length as 127 feet. A whole-boat charter can also be taken by six or seven guests.

Where does she cruise?

On the Canal de Briare, through the Upper Loire and Western Burgundy, between Montargis and Châtillon-sur-Loire, calling at Amilly, Montbouy, Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses, La Gazonne and Briare. Alternate weeks run in the reverse direction. On the way the barge crosses the Briare aqueduct above the River Loire.

Is Renaissance charter only, or by the cabin?

Both. European Waterways sells her by the suite, to guests who share the barge with others, or as a whole-boat charter. Children under 12 are not permitted on per-cabin bookings; a charter welcomes children and infants of any age, and charter parties can ask for changes to the regular schedule, confirmed in writing.

What is the Briare aqueduct?

Gustave Eiffel's canal bridge, which carries the Canal de Briare over the Loire. European Waterways gives it as 662 metres long and 10,000 tons, and says it was completed in September 1896. In the sample itinerary Renaissance crosses it on the Friday, with the river passing underneath.
